Hi all, I have read around the forums for a lil while since playing sim city 4 but have only just signed up today =).

I just have a quick question to ask, I have been playing the game for a little while and would now like to download some extra buildings from the STEX section to add to my cities, but I just wanted to know if they replace other buildings in the game?

Like if i download a building and put it into my plug-ins folder, will it delete a previous building that came wif the game or does it just add in the building as an extra?

I jus dont want to lose any of the existing default buildings thats all =)

Thanks for any help!

xx

Most/All of them will not replace any default buildings in the game...Just read the description carefully.

Be wary of anything like airports, seaports or any rewards. If a beginner uses any of these as a base for their custom lot then they will most likely replace in game buildings, as that is the way Maxis set the Lot Editor for these kinds of buildings. It takes quite a bit of skill to make it not replace an in-game reward, so be careful what you download for those items.

    Thanks very much =)

Just another quick thing (sorry), is there a limit to how many buildings u can have from stex?

Like can I have 5 or 6 in the plugins folder and it wont cause a problem?

And do the dependecy files have to be in the same folder as the buildings or can they be anywhere as long as they are in the plugins folder?

Thanks again! =) sorry 2 be a pain

You can download as many as you want.  Some peoples' plug-ins are well over a gig..lol.  But do know that it can slow down loading times (on my old computer, it took 5-10 minutes just to start the game, lol) but...I don't think this is as bad on newer computers.

Pretty sure it doesn't matter where your dependencies are under the plug-ins folder.

Mine's currently at only 660mb but growing. Lots of plugins will slow your load times but that's about it.

I recommend keeping the dependency files with the lot files in case you want to remove the lot. Otherwise you will have unneeded files loading into memory.

Or you can make a separate colder just for dependencies. I would recommend keeping your plugins folder very organized. Any organizing method is fine, just do what ever works for you. Another good tip, if you have plenty of time to spend, is to make a list of what buildings you have and what dependencies they use or make a list of dependencies and match what buildings use them. There are many ways of doing it!

It's always best to organize your Plugins folder so that you can find each thing you download easily, such as sorting files in a directory like this:

    "/Plugins/Name Of Author/Name Of Building/[FILES]"

    so for example:

    SC4.jpg

This is so that if anything you download doesn't work or causes a problem, you can simply delete the folder without searching for hours for the correct files.
