Hi.

I was wondering has anyone ever found a way to allow you to play alot bigger areas than the standard small, medium and large ones?

The game was released in 2003.  Suerly we can now run areas on modern day computing power 4 times that (at least) of the original large sized area??

Anyone point me in the right direction of such a mod?

Bob

Hi, L. B. Bob!

Problem is, a mod like that would only come about after modifying the .exe file, which is illegal. That, and even with computers nowadays using quad core processors and ridiculously powerful graphics cards, computations in a completed city that size would still bring a computer to a stand-still.

So to answer the question: it hasn't happened, and it probably won't happen for a loooong while (if ever).

But what if it was not a full-built city and just a small city and suburbs?

also, I dont and wont want to break the law, but how would the police know?quote>

The size of the buildings don't matter as much as the amount of buildings and calculations that go into the city.  If you build a city that's larger than the regular "large" city, even if it's all suburbs, that's still a massive amount of work for the simulator to do: where does each person work, how do they get there, how much do they put into taxes, how does this effect other cities, how much traffic, how much pollution...on a large city, that can slow stuff down, so imagine that on a huge tile, especially with the amount of add-ons that most people have.

And it's not the police you'd be worrying about, it's EA.  If you modified the .exe on your own, without distributing it and without telling or showing any tell-tale signs that you've done so (i. e., no showing pictures, no bragging about it, etc.), then you might get away with it.  If, however, you show a picture on ST showcasing your magically expanded city, or you distributed the new file that let you build huge single cities and diagonal bridges and whatnot, not only would you probably be banned from ST (and every other SC4 fansite), but EA would most likely be notified and sue you for every penny you've got.  And you'd probably end up in jail.  In the end, it's not worth it simply to have a larger city (in my opinion).

As Masochist said, even if modifying the .exe file was legal, most computers today (including mine) would probably grind to a halt with a 16 x 16 city tile running all at once, with development.

About EA/the police, if you modified the .exe without distributing it or notifying it to anyone, you would probably not encounter EA or the police. If you let out a sign of it, the full might of EA is going to pounce on you like the Borg on planets (i.e. scoop your money up without a trace).

So, the short answer is it is improbable and not desirable to have larger city tiles, or to attempt to do so.
