My Biggest Pet Peeve!

Okay guys and gals, this may seem weird but I am getting very frustrated and I'm hoping maybe I can get some good explanations. I have a big pet peeve of people NOT pushing their chair in behind them. I've never understood why people don't do it and it seems to be bothering me more and more. I always push my chair in behind me and don't even think about it. I work in the hospitality industry and we have a dining area. Everyday when people are done eating and they leave, I have to go in there and push in over a dozen chairs. It drives me absolutely crazy! Is this something that parents should be paying more attention to when teaching their children? Is it just something you either do or don't do for no apparent reason? I just don't know the answer. How many of you always push your chair in behind you? It doesn't seem to be a very common thing. But it should be! lol

(I know it seems petty but I'm going insane! 32.gif)

It depends, really. If leaving the chair pulled out is a significant obstruction that prevents me from getting by, then I'll obviously push it in so I can get by. But otherwise, I'll just leave it pulled out since there doesn't seem to be a practical purpose to pushing it in when it would just have to be pulled out again the next time someone wants to sit in it.

Same sorta thing with the toilet seat. I always leave it up. Because if I put it down and the next user of the bathroom is male, the effort for me to put it down and for them to pull it up will have been wasted. Practically speaking, it's best to leave the seat in the position you found it. Let's diagram this out:

If everyone always leaves the seat down (or up, just reverse everything):

- Female user followed by female user - no movement, no effort

- Female user followed by male user - male lifts seat, one unit effort

- Male user followed by female user - male puts seat down, one unit effort

- Male user followed by male user - first male puts it down, second lifts it up - two units effort

Average: one unit effort

But if everyone just leaves it in whatever position they used it in:

- Female user followed by female user - no movement, no effort

- Female user followed by male user - male lifts seat, one unit effort

- Male user followed by female user - female puts seat down, one unit effort

- Male user followed by male user - no movement, no effort

Average: one-half unit effort

Conclusion: Men, leave the seat up. Women, stop complaining when they do. It's more efficient that way.

If you always take the same road, you will never see anything new.

My momma done raised me good, learned me how to be polite.29.gif  The way I learned it, you should always push the chair in behind you.  For the past year+ I was living at a place where almost everybody ate together, in a rather cramped space, and the people who failed to push their chairs in would cause major problems for people trying to sit down.  In short I always do it, and people who don't are jerks! 3.gif  BTW, my momma learned me to speak good too. 2.gif

Columnist Ann Landers had a continuing discussion about this.   Her conclusion was that everyone should put both the seat and the lid down and everyone should lift up whichever part(s) they need to lift up.    That is the most equitable since everyone is lifting and replacing something.   and the closed lid helps keep dogs, cats, and small children from playing in there.

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing.    - Pope Francis

I leave it in whatever position it's in when I finish using it.

With public toilets, they are just gross, If the seat is down but I have to pee oh well, I rather not touch it and I just aim well enough to not splash the seat like a 4 year old.
