What's the best resolution on flat screen monitor?

I just got a new rig and a new 20" monitor. I maxed the resolution to 1680x1050 and my cities now look flat (like I'm actually looking at LODs).  I think it's because I have a wider screen so everything is stretched.  What's the highest resolution that won't flatten out the look of my cities?

This tag should be added to the target of the shortcut:

"C:\Program Files\Games\simcity 4\Apps\SimCity 4.exe" -CustomResolution:enabled -r1440x900x32 -f -intro: off

Subsitute the desired resolution for the above numbers.  The last two numbers [32] are for the color level.

It should be the same ratio of your monitor.  You will be limited to the maximum resolution of the moniter, and of course the resolution you choose below the maximum will decrease the sharpness of the image.

Depending what operating system you are running, the last two numbers may cause your custom resolution to fail. Here is what my shortcut code looks like running on Vista:

"C:\Program Files\Maxis\SimCity 4\Apps\SimCity 4.exe" -CustomResolution:enabled -r1920x1200

Just change that to your resolution (1680x1050) and one of the two codes tungston and I posted should work.

The way to choose which resolution and color level to set, is to right click on your desktop, choose properties, click on settings, and take note of where they are at right now. If you aren't convinced, then move the resolution slider (higher is better) and try combinations with the color setting (higher is better), then hit ok to try them out - some will work and some will fail.

Once you find the resolution and color setting that are either what you are using now (usually the correct ones to use for SimCity) or the settings that look best to you, then you can input those numbers into the short cut code you were given above. Good luck~!
