Radiation from Nuclear Blast

Im sure this has been answered here before, but the search facility seems to think "radiation" is an ignored word...

Anyway - I have a city where a nuclear plant blew up leaving a large uninhabitable area - the msg i got at the time said something along the lines of "it will take many years before the area is inhabitable again"

After approx 500 years of in game time I still have the radiation in that area - anyone know long it takes to go away (or if it does at all) ??

thanks

It dissipates in 10,000 years. I'm sure of that. Radiation from the Toxic Waste Dump dissipates in a few months. Youre best bet in my opinion is to either not use them if you can help it, or place they far far away from anything you value in your city. There is NO realistic way to combat radiation. Tungston's suggestion to not save the game, exit, and go back in, to stop the explosion, is the pretty much the only option you would have had. If you hate radiation, there is a NO Radiation Mod that takes it away from the 4 buildings that give it off, but I believe it does nothing for Nuclear Power Plant explosions. Good luck putting your city on fast forward for a few days. 4.gif

Once you have a lot with radiation in the city, the "No Radiation" mod will not remove the radiation. You need to install the mod before you plop a lot with radiation.

I have had no such luck with the Toxic Waste Dump dissipating the radiation. I moved one and the pollution is still at the origional site many years later.

Very true... Tungston is right as always, mod first, its too late if the radiation is already there. However I have been able to successfully destroy a disease research center, save the game, exit, load the 'no radiation' mod for that building, restart the game, enter the city, place the disease research center again, and voila... no radiation this time around.

I could have sworn that my game disappated the Toxic Waste dump's radiation after a few months, but I will have to re-test it again, after reading what Tungston said above.

10000 years ? ah well only 9500 to go...

I thought it might be more realistic and interesting to cover the zone with trees and allow the city to grow around the blast site and then eventually redevelop it, rather than just quit without saving - although had I known it was 10000 years then may have ditched that idea...

its no big deal though its just one tile in a region so ill get over it.

    thanks for the responses.

Boycey08, after about 10 years of having the disease research center (assuming you have no mod that removes the radiation), try going to the Radiation Graph, and move the slider around and see if there are any jumps at all in the history. You might find that it comes and goes at times.

It dissipates in 10,000 years in SimCity 4. It could be worse, however.

Let's assume the Nuclear power plants in SC4 use low-enriched uranium. In real life - for 235U -it would take 703,800,000 years for the radioactivity to wear off to half of it's original value (half-life). So 10,000 years might seem long but I think it's pretty fair!

Like tungston said, if a nuclear power plant blows up, exit without saving if you don't want to wait 10,000 SC4 years for the radioactivity to go away.

I'm sure you could make some kind of radiation cleaner in ILive.

Don't regard that radioactive city as wasted though. Sure, it's nasty... no sim will build anything there, not even the poor, not even dirty industry, not even at 0% taxes. But you are not a sim - you can still use that otherwise useless space for landfills, power plants, or business deals. You can even put civic buildings in there if you want - they'll still function just fine (though with few if any residents within a civic building's radius, it might not serve much purpose to do so). Bottom line is, the radiation drops desirability to nothing for all groups... but it doesn't stop you from plopping buildings there. The sims are just stupid enough that they will go work in those buildings, too. Don't plop RCI buildings though, they can and will abandon due to low (very very very low) desirability.

Heck, the land is already radioactive anyway - go ahead, put another nuke plant there! The next time it blows up, you won't even care!! 9.gif

At what point do the Nuclear plants meltdown? I've never had that, and I wish to avoid it at all costs.

Nuclear plants in SC4 typically go critical and explode when they are severely overworked, or are severely damaged by something such as fire.

Is there an early warning sign, incase i'm in the super fast speed? And how do I prevent it, just build another power plant so as not to overwork the nuclear?

Personally I never use the Nuclear Power Plants - I like the Nuc-free-ordince too much.

However, for those that are using them, I would recommend replacing them before 90% of

    their theoritical Life-Span has passed.

Just pause the game - bull-doze the old power plant - plop a new power plant - and continue.

    Hope this helps,
