Frankly I am relieved being a Brooklynite I am glad to see people paying attention to the other boroughs while no one disputes Manhattan is the most influential part of the city. But from what i have seen on ST  people who build new york city regions tend to forget to pay attention to the other boroughs.

Yeah, I definitely can't wait to see something like this. There has been alot of new New York City journals coming out in the past week. This one sounds promising. And what Gravis456 said is right. Even if Manhattan is the most known and popular borough in the city, theres more to New York! Me living on Long Island, I really can't wait to see some screenshots!

Thank you all, for you fast replies! Well, I've actually created three of the 25 large cities of my personal New York area and I'm just working on JFK Airport, which is quiet a lot of work, due to the puzzle pieces of Joergs Airport Set Vers. 3. So you should stay a little patient to see the first screenshots, but I'm on it! I'm planing to bring up my journal on it's own webpage or a subsite of my page and I'm working out a layout for this right now. Well all of the ST operators will sure be happy to hear about posting my pics on an external site and I will asure this site and all pictures will be available for a long time!

To bring you a little imagination of all the features my NYC will host, here is a small list of what I'm going to create:

    - The region will host 25 cities, including complete Manhattan island, parts of Brooklyn, Queens and parts of Bronx. The borders will be Bronx in the upper left, Alley Park in the upper right, Rockaway Park in the lower right and the financial district of Manhattan and the Upper Bay in the lower left corner.

    - The region will host all major and minor transportation systems, as all highways, tunnels, bridges, railways, elevated and underground subway system with all stations, yellow cabs, JFK AirTrain and busses.

    - The region will include the La Guardia and J.F. Kennedy airports aswell as the Flushing Airfield. It will also include the helipads of Manhattan.

    - I try to copy a realistic building hight in the different areas. So Manhattan will of course hold alot of high rised buildings, while the outer boroughs will be full of middle and low rised buildings.

    - All major landmarks will be set in the right position as far as they are available for download (as BAT or LOT). There will be of course the World Trade Center, Empire, Chrysler and PanAm/MetLife Building, aswell as the Woolworth and Flatiron Building. There will also be the National American History and Guggenheim Museum and Licoln Center. I'm still searching for the UN Headquarters and the Plaza Hotel...

    - The roadmap will be the most accurate SC will provide. So Manhattan will have eleven avenues and alot of streets. The outer boroughs, which are more diagonal, will be created in the most acceptable way to the original.

    - All major parks, as Central Park, Prospect Park, Flushing Meadows and the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge will be there in it's original scale - which means Central Park has nearby the size of 1/4 of a large city!

    - Within Manhattan private traffic will be extremly reduced. You will find a lot of yellow cabs and busses there. Also the police cars have the right style.

There will be alot more to discover in my NYC and you will see it on the first screenshots. I promise to upload them as soon as possible!

Unfortunatly I was in New York just for three times in 1997, 1998 and 2001. I've just been to Manhattan and parts of Brooklyn, so I don't know much about the other boroughs. So if you want to support me and my project, please send me some pictures of the areas outside Manhatten, especially those, not be found by Google picsearch. Please don't post them here! Send them by email to the following adress: gabriel@pielke.net Thanks alot!

Don't forget SUperstar's Citicorp Center. That building is located on Lexington Avenue. Also, the GE Building (NBC Studios) is located at the Sim City 4 official website. It's under Rockefeller Center at the downloads section. I am curious, what building will you use for the Woolworth Building?

Thank you for your support! I look forward to recieve your pics to create the most realistic NYC. Yep, I'm afraid too my map does not contain New Jersey, but due to a Mac version of SC4 I only can use a maximum map size of 1281x1281 px., so I had to choose whether I want New Jersey or JFK Airport. Actually I decided the airport will be a great challange...

Also thanks for reminding me of the Citicorp Center, I allready have this building and I'm still looking for the GE Building. Aswell I'm searching for a functional version of the Grand Central Station, both files I downloaded here appear as a big brown box! I have the same problem with the Rockafeller Center. So if you have a working file, please tell me where to find!

Today I will finish JFK Airport and start up with some parts of Harlem. First screenshots of down- and midtown Manhattan will come TODAY!

Here we go folks, the first screenshot of my NYC. You will see the south end of Manhattan with Down- and Midtown, which are almost build up completly. Further shots, especially close ups will follow within the next days! Today I finished the J.F.K. Airport and will add some surrounding areas before I will post it here! Once again I ask for pictures and files to complete my region. Please send all material to gabriel@pielke.net - Thanx alot!

    And here it is:

Not bad not bad at all but i hope those density holes in manhattan are just because this is CJ is in its early stages.

Keep up the excellent work though.1.gif

wow gpSIM! that new york is looking very real. Just because it's in early stages I am going to wait for your updates. Because I see lots and lots of abandonment?34.gif but anyways looks great so far! i see central park! looks very nice43.gif

Actually Gravis,  those density holes are realisitc.  Manhattan has a large 5-6 story housing stock.  The largest concrete canyons you're thinking of exist primarily in midtown and downtown.   There are large appartment complexes surrounding all of central park and tenement houses lining good portions of the east river and harlem river.  Manhattan is more than just the jungle of skyscrapers you see in so many Cj and while the realism of this Cj is debatable, I'd say gpSIM is getting density mostly right.  Although I do agree that abandonment does seem like a problem, but I personally think that that is a problem owing to the games designers who decided to make abandoned buildings look like giant black monoliths.

Keep up the work, I'm reserving judgement on this journal.44.gif

    About the screenshot:

Well, yes, the CJ is quiete young, but about those density lacks: As you all know, Greenwich Village is of very low density and also the industrial areas along Hudson River are of low density. So I've tried to keep this in mind by building my city. As you can see the area around midtown, 5th Ave., Broadway, TimesSquare and of course the Financial District are of high density with alot of skyscapers. I've tried to place them the most accurate way, but just from my memory - which of course could be full of lacks... ;-)

About creating the cities: I will first set the roads, avenues and highways followed by all major buildings (landmarks, city hall, hospitals, schools, universities, etc.). After that the coastline will optimized and setup with an embankment. Harbours, ports, airports, helipads, ferries and so on will be next. Than firedepartments, police stations and additional schools and hospitals, cemetaries, churchs will be set. After that busstops, taxistands and subways will be created. The last step is creating the zones. They will be set all at once and as I said I try to copy the original density.

After creating it all, I will run the city in the fast forward mode until the mid 80ties first - I stopp here for possible modifications and run the cities up to 2001... Why? Because I have the WTC in my city and I wanna keep it... ;-)

Thank you tracer1138 for the same opinion! Well, the abandonments will appeare because the industrial zones are to small for those high density residential areas of Manhattan. I added some more industries in Midtown at the East River but at least there is too much residential for this little industry and commercial. I will not use any mods to solve this problem, because I try to reach the same population of about 7-9 mio. sims as the real NYC area. Actually there are about 1mio. sims living on Manhattan island...

I am aware of the density in of manhattan Tracer but some areas are still a little skimpish in comparison to the the actual city thas all i was sayin 1.gif

And to GP I am sorry for not specifying which areas I was talking about I'll make sure to next time.

One other thing i am havin a slight problem with finding the Williamsburg clock tower picture so its gonna take a bit longer than i expected 34.gif.

Okay folks, here we go: I have some new screenshots! They show just some impressions of my city, of course they should not show anything but just some nice shots of my New York.

    scr002.jpg
A beautiful view to the WTC plaza, just over the Marriott Hotel.

    scr003.jpg
Lady Liberty on Liberty Island. I tried to copy the ferry terminal and the few touristic commercial zones on the island. I don't like the wind turbine, thinking about underwater cables instead.

    scr004.jpg
$$-housing in NY could be a boring thing...

Hope you like those shots! More is coming up next!

Tell me how did I miss this thread?! 18.gif

I basically do the same thing, using my map too with few changes:
    - I use some other config.bmp, what is yours? Manhattan island is divided when using blue only config.bmp
    - I play without cheating, meaning trying to build the city while playing; I know it's worse for copying cities but I just want to have some fun too 2.gif
    - When building financial district I figured out that my map is not in scale :/
    - I started from building Queens and Brooklyn and when I have enough people I'll let them travel to finansial district (from South Brooklyn mostly)
    - I figured out that simcity generates more traffic than real cities do, meaning with the subway system we have in real it's hard not to get heavy traffic in brooklyn or queens, and as we know it's not that hard there
    - I have to cheat in the way that I place a lot of industrial that is not in the real city. I made for example all the eastern brooklyn an industrial city 47.gif. How are you handling the city without industrial?
    - I don't make a CJ because I know how bad is it going to be 2.gif

And as for materials you need, use the Nasa WorldWind located here: http://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/
It gives you 1m/pixel pictures of whole US so you'll be able to make a REALLY exact copy 2.gif
