How far will Sims walk to a rail/subway/bus station?

building surface rail to supplement my transport but don;t know how many stations to place/how far apart?

Well, that would depend upon if you have installed the NAM or not. In the standard game, it has been suggested that sims will walk up to 8 tiles to get where they need to go. If you do have NAM, it will depend on what you chose for the Traffic Controller plugin. Traffic plugin A allows the sims to walk up to 47 tiles and B uses the standard figures (I think). So you can go from there.

I installed NAM earlier today (yesterday), and took all the defaults.  Do you know whether there is a way to query what I chose for this option short of uninstalling and re-installing NAM?

Nothing to query in game as far as I know. It depends on what you selected when installing. You can look in the NAM folder in your plugins to see which traffic controller file you have. Should be something like "NetworkAddonMod_Traffic_Plugin_C_Standard.dat" if you just clicked through the installation. That is that is the file for the standard game function.
