They exist for a good reason, you know. The idea is that only a person can get past them. A computer program can't. So it prevents bots from spamming up advertising and whatnot.

Think about it. Would you rather have to fill out a CAPTCHA upon registering, or would you rather have a forum that's always getting flooded with "Buy viagara cheap!!!1" and "Click here for a chance to win a free ipod!" by adbots?

Oh I never said they weren't a good thing, I just find them annoying sometimes, especially when they get so hard to read you can't tell what is what, like this one from Rapidshare:

Well, apparently Rapidshare listened to they Many, Many, Many complaints about their CAPTCHAs because they did away with the asinine things. Now its just a 60 second wait period and a button!

Now what will we make fun of though?

In their site redesign they removed the CAPTCHAs altogether, although near the end there they were getting notorious for being... perhaps the most difficult CAPTCHAs on the web? I mean, usually I would fail (2-4) of them before getting one right. Darn cats.

With the Can't read? there, that's helpful for people with some forms of mental and sight disorders/problems.
