The Large Hadron Collider is activating tomorrow (specifically at 08:30 UTC). Discuss.  Oopsies, my mistake, it's not activating until next month. Sorry. 43.gif

Nuclear Physicists unite! Big day for that field. About the black hole theory, it would evaporate due to Hawking radiation before it could do much damage. Still, it would make an interesting study.

I'll be following this bit of news closely.

Go Science! 48.gif

We need more science.

I'm very eager to see what happens as well. Unfortunately I'm quite sure that most people (especially people in the states) will unaware of anything happening because the media will probably just be talking about Obama vs McCain... again.

As for the 888 thing, many of the titles of "Jesus" have the number eight as a prominent feature or factor. "KurioV" (Lord in greek)) has the value of 800. CristoV (Christ) is 1480 which has the factors 37x8x5. Alhqeia (Truth) is 8x8. Swthr (Savior) is 1408, 8x8x22. I think you see where I'm going. And of course, the name lhsouV (Jesus in greek) adds up to 888 as well. So it's probably a lucky number. Only thing is, I think it's more of a coincidence as the whole preporation of the LHC took a very long time. This could have been in the planning all along or something. Or perhaps they just changed the startup date a few days back or forward. 9.gif

I seriously doubt the black hole will appear, something of an exaggeration.

I'm looking forward to this, will be a great day in the continued development and progression of science. Though most of the world will be watching the Olympics Opening Ceremony.

    Hawking radiation? bullcrapquote>

Do you ever know what that is or understand it, given the general history of your posting in these forums, I doubt it...and no typing it in Wikipedia does not count..

Hawking Radiation -- a quantum condition in which virtual particles are created near its event horizon. One of the particles falls into the black hole and the other escapes. The one that falls in has negative energy, thus causing the black hole to lose mass.

That's how I understand it. Might not be exactly correct, since I'm not a quantum physicist.

8-8-08? I doubt if anything paranormal is going to happen because of that, but it is interesting. The Olympics start on August 8th also.

Interesting. I hate to admit this, but I actually knew nothing about this until now. (I know! Just get it over with and scold me 3.gif)

In that case.... I better get a ton of cans of food and water jugs and hide in my basement for the impending apocalypse. (If you can't tell the sarcasm, I feel very sorry for you 3.gif)

the olympics are due to start on 8-8-08 because the number 8 is auspicious in Chinese. Hey, maybe CERN will find the higgs boson, riding on chinese good luck 9.gif.

    No, they won't.

They will, however, succeed in giving a helicopter cancer. 2.gif

Hmm The original thread title was LHC activates in 24 hours.

On 8-7-08. 24 hours later would be 8-8-08.

Which may be 8-9-08 in france when it actualy tests.

Not exactly  running the actual tests but  a big step.

Cern lab set for beam milestone

    By Paul Rincon

The magnets are linked up in a chain for 27km

A vast physics experiment - the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) - reaches a key milestone this weekend ahead of an official start-up on 10 September.

Engineers had previously brought a beam of protons - tiny, sub-atomic particles - to the "doorstep" of the LHC.

On 9 August, protons will be piped through LHC magnets for the first time.

The most powerful physics experiment ever built, the LHC will re-create the conditions present in the Universe just after the Big Bang.

    o.gif
start_quote_rb.gifIt's been a long-haul, and we're all eager to get the LHC research programme underway end_quote_rb.gif
    Lyn Evans, LHC project leader
For the two-day "synchronisation test", engineers will thread a low intensity beam through the injection system and one of the LHC's eight sectors.

These two sectors have now reached a sufficient level of readiness to handle the energetic stream of particles, and this opened up the opportunity to run the test.

The purpose of the test is to help ensure that the LHC is working in step with its injector, known as the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) accelerator.

    Precision timing

Before a beam can be injected into the main ring, the proton beams have to be boosted to high energies in a chain of particle accelerators called injectors.

The SPS is the last link in this chain of injectors; it is from here that protons are fed directly into the LHC ring via two "injection lines" - one for each beam.

"The aim is to get the timings right between the two machines and in order to do that we will take some beam into sector 2-3," said Roberto Saban, the LHC's head of hardware commissioning.

    Atlas pixel barrel (Cern)
Each detector is the sum of many complicated elements
Cern, the organisation that operates the collider, said it will attempt to circulate two proton beams all the way around the ring on 10 September. This is considered the giant lab's official "switch-on".

"It's been a long haul, and we're all eager to get the LHC research programme underway," said Lyn Evans, the project leader.

This full beam injection will take place at an energy of about 450 gigaelectronvolts (GeV). Over subsequent weeks, engineers will gradually boost the energy and fine tune the machine.

The proton beams are fired down pipes running through the magnets. Once engineers have two beams running, they will travel in opposite directions around the main ring at super-fast speeds.

    Beam collision

When the collider is commissioned, the beams will cross paths at allotted points along the tunnel, smashing into one another with cataclysmic force.

Scientists hope to see new particles in the debris of these collisions, revealing fundamental new insights into the nature of the cosmos and how it came into being.

In order to obtain high magnetic fields without consuming too much power, the LHC's magnets need to be "superconducting".

This is the property, exhibited by some materials at very low temperatures, to channel electrical current with zero resistance and very little power loss.

This requires cooling the magnets to a temperature of 1.9 Kelvin (-271C; -456F). Six out of eight sectors are currently at their operating temperatures; cooling of the remaining two should be completed in the next few weeks.

Over August, scientists will continue electrical testing of the LHC hardware prior to circulating beams in early September.

This phase will continue into September to ensure that the entire machine is capable of accelerating and colliding beams at an energy of five teraelectronvolts (TeV).

Once stable, circulating beams have been established, they will be smashed together - in preparation for the LHC's science phase.quote>

Well..if there is a black hole, and we all die..it'll be quick and we wont be concious afterwards. so...dont really care.

AHHHHH!!!!! We're all going to die before we get a chance to be scared...I supposse it's as good a way as any for the planet to end...just kidding...but not really...So, I don't know when the thread was renamed to 1 hour so what time (GMT) is this thing going on line at?

Probably years. Even after they run the experiments they have to process all the information

the sensors collected. Looking for one out of the ordinary blip in Gagillions of bits of information.
