A Wanderer's Journey

A Travel Guide through the Region of Monaco

The main intention of this City Journal (CJ) is not only to entertain; this is intended for you, the user, to be informed about the developments of my region, in which I affectionately named Monaco, a small country in Europe, but, this is just a coincidental name of a region, in which I have designed in SimCity 4. I hope that you enjoy reading through this city journal from the very start.

I       The Explorer and Developer

In a country filled with mineral and agricultural wealth, Rhodania, an island-nation located in the South Pacific, has been developing so rapidly that many communities have been formed around the island. But, there is one area of the country that has not yet been developed by anyone -- a large, fertile land that many believe that it cannot develop fully because of its vast size. The area is called Monaco, in which in the Rhodanian language means "barren land", and there have been several attempts by developers to exploit the large, unspoiled land.

Monaco Region

With a large flatland to cover for development, a well-known explorer and urban planner, Howard Periwinkle, proposed plans to develop the region according to what he dreams of an ultimate plan: a plan that will integrate businesses and residences, interconnected with various freeways, roads, and mass-transit, while maintaining the region's consciousness for the environment. Many urban planners before Howard failed to convince the Rhodanians because the plans do not cover their economic and social desires of a balanced growth and environmental consciousness that leaves many large businesses out of the picture.

Howard's success roots from the fact that he studied the land carefully -- from the arrangement of farms and commercial buildings, to the distribution of energy and water supplies. He also lauded the Rhodanian Government's plans to allow solar and fusion energy to be used for Monaco because they believe that it will cut energy dependence from fossil fuels by at least half. In fact, the government wanted to exploit all forms of natural-occurring power supplies (from the sun, wind, and other sources) that will ultimately make Monaco and Rhodania green.

He also wanted to introduce hybrid and ecologically-friendly cars to the region, such that he initiated a Green Movement for Monaco and Rhodania that will let the government and its citizens to purchase hybrid vehicles for half the cost of most conventional cars. He initiated also a project to introduce green farms throughout the region wherein people will eat organic and healthy foods that will be traded throughout Monaco, and with the hybrid cars and the massive transit system used to transport them, it will amount to a lot of savings for Monaco and Rhodania as a whole. One such example of a hybrid car that will be used for trade is shown below:

A Hybrid Light Truck

Howard believes that the Green Movement for Rhodania is a great initiative that he wanted to start building the Monaco Region the environmentally-friendly and economically-feasible way.

"Monaco is an enchanted, exciting region that will be my best project in my urban planning career," Howard said, about the region's large, mostly flat area. Although the land is mostly empty, he wondered and surveyed throughout the region, on foot, with a local guide from Rhodania's west, explaining the potential development of the area and the problems it faces. Howard's first idea is to build a town in the middle of the region, and he will build his dream region from there. He provided a layout for the region, in which he proposed building at least 6 freeways that interconnect the whole region and the rest of Rhodania, and zoning of farms and commercial areas accordingly with the wishes of the Rhodanian people.

II        Providence: The Birthplace of Monaco

Howard decided to start his development somewhere in the eastern part of the region, where he believes that a medium-sized town can be developed while not destroying the pastoral environment of the development area. He called the first town he built in Monaco as Providence, named after a town in Lucrida, his home country. He placed a time capsule at the geographic center of town, signifying his start of the town's development.

He started laying out the town by building a freeway, in which he called it as the Monaco Central Freeway (F-1), and several large farms on both sides. He also started laying out small "villages" on both sides, too, close to the farmlands where people can start building homes and shops. After his development, people started building their own settlements, which resulted in these:

Providence

Town Center of Providence

Providence 2

Central Part of Providence, including Providence Stadium

Freeway Providence

Monaco Central Freeway, bypassing Providence

South Providence

Southern Providence

Howard noticed that the farms are quickly being replaced by small and medium-sized shops that it may not be called a pastoral community any longer. Lots of restaurants, shops, and hotels rolled by the city as it progressed. He immediately thought of a plan to make a more commercialized city than Providence.

Town of Providence Statistics

Population Commercial and Industrial Jobs Number of Energy/Water Facilities Number of Commuters Sports Teams Median Income 21,200 Commercial: 14,500

Industrial: 980

Energy Facilities: 1

Water Facilities: 4

Bus: 7,000

Train: 5,400

Cars: 4,000

Providence Warriors (soccer), Providence Eagles (baseball) $55,000

III         Santa Clara: The First Main Town of Monaco

Howard's sudden realization that Providence has grown fast into more commercial and less farming made him to think quickly about building a city that will cater to the unexpected population boom of the region. He took first steps into making a large city wherein it will provide more jobs and allow more residents to stay in Monaco. Howard, then, decided to build the next town west of Providence and connect the existing highway as well. He named the next town as Santa Clara, his patron saint.

His first step is to build an international airport for the area that will cater to the growing population of the region, as shown below:

A close-up view of the Airport

Along with the airport, Howard planned to build a large Civic Center wherein the central government of Santa Clara and Monaco will be built. Here are some snapshots of the Civic Center in development:

Now, Howard is asking himself what to do with the land and money he has right now. He wonders whether or not build a residential complex to the east of the Civic Center, or to continue expanding the Civic Center further to the south, with more offices and parks. He also wonders whether he will put in a large building to signify Santa Clara's reputation as a major town in Monaco. Give him suggestions on how you want to continue developing Santa Clara in order for him to continue the region's growth, without wasting too much money. The proposals:

Plan 1: go eastwards towards the freeway and build the Financial District

Plan 2: place a large tower (i.e. Portsmouth Harbor Tower) to signify the city's importance to Monaco

Plan 3: build more civic buildings to the west of the Civic Center

Plan 4: expand more residential areas to the east and build commercial areas

Proposals

Howard will be waiting for your replies soon.
