Mass transit making me crazy!

Hi all,

I have a region with about 6 cities, average res. size is about 40k with a (sickly) bussiness district. in the works.  I have been trying to alleviate the growing traffic problem (I already use NAM on the best settings) with rail.  I tried Subways but it seems only the "rich" like to use it so I have been messing with passenger trains.

What I am seeing is, no matter how many stations I put in, the sims will only use one of them in each city, and they pound the crap out of it.  I mean like %600-%700 usage, while 3 or 4 empty stations right next to them go unused.

Why is this?!  Why do they all insist on standing in line at one station when there are several others a stones throw away?

And moving them doesnt matter either, all it does is move the bottle neck somewhere else 15.gif

do you have parking garages around the stations, that often encourages sims to "park and ride". Or you can place some bus stations thru out the city and put some next to the stations.

Parking garages and buses for sure. You should target where people commute the most. And also diagnoal lines. Do help alot cause sims take the shortest distance route. And making it diagonal thru instead of straight lines will make them take diagonal and will overload them.

It happened to me something like that a while ago. I realized that it was from the best settings of the NAM. Try to bring back the default values on the NAM and I think your sims will start using your rail more properly.

This may sound awkward, but it worked for me.

Ah, so the best settings on NAM may not really be the best?

Have to give that a try.

To the other posts:  I understand the shortest path principle, but what confuses me is the fact that I can have six stations, either right next to each other where I see the bottleneck or scattered about and they still always just hammer one of them while the rest go unused.

Transportation is a touch and go situation as it is one of the central features of SimCity 4. I generall set up residential clusters with a main station which leads to a junction not easitly reached by road. Bus stations at the RR points are good. If you are on a large map, consider using either elevated trains or monorail. For downtown think of using GLR connected to the RR startions by pedestrial plazas.

    Thanks.

Would you happen to have any screen shots of what you mean? I am not quite following you...plus, what does GLR mean?
