Game Crashes.

Ok, I have uninstalled and reinstalled many times, but to no avail. I am running SimCity 4 Deluxe Edition. I don't even get the bridge screen with the bridge over water. My screen just goes dark, and it looks like its loading, but then just goes back to the desktop with no notification whatsoever. I am running Windows XP: Media Center Edition, SP2.  I have 2048MB virtual memory (initial and max), and 512MB of RAM. I have 24.5GB of free hard drive space. There are no plugins installed for Sim City, and it is updated to the latest version. I am using DirectX 9.0c. Any Ideas?

1) Uninstall. Clear the registry entry for SC4 (enter "regedit" in the 'Run" bar unter Start.)

2) Restart.

3) Remove all related files.

4) Check system requirements.

5) Reinstall. If this doesn't work, get a new copy of the game.

Hope this helps... i feel your pain.

Thanks, I'll see if that works.

Using regedit to "delete everything that seems to be SC4 related" is not a good idea at all, not to mention it wouldn't help anything. In regards to 5, the games are the same. Buying another copy of Simcity wouldn't help anything either.

So far it seems your computer meets the requirements (512MB of ram is still kind of small, but SC4 should run fine nevertheless). punchout3, what is your graphics card? Do you have the latest drivers for it? Do you have the latest drivers for all other components?

And of course, I've seen this happen before. Before you try any of this other stuff, try appending -intro43.gifff to the end of a shortcut's target (it should resemble "C:\Program Files\Maxis\SimCity 4\Apps\SimCity 4.exe" -intro43.gifff)

    f_whatm_84df933.jpg

(note: it's supposed to be -intro : off (without the spaces). Dang forums...)

    -intro:off

There isn't anything SC4 in the registry that will cause a problem, and it's risky at best to edit it.

You should however delete the *\Maxis\SimCity 4 *\ folder if you are reinstalling, but if you have plugins in the plugin subfolder you might want to copy that elsewhere to save those files.

Turning the intro off crashed my system forcing me to reboot. I have an ATI Mobility Radeon Xpress 200 graphics card with driver version 8.471.0.0. This driver was updated on February 25th, of this year, so I will go hunting for a newer version. I wish there were an easier way to find drivers for all components. Should I post the exception log for the most recent crash of the game (the one with -intro43.gifff)?

I had the same problem running Vista with an nVidia GEForce 6300 GS card.  When I reinstall, I can get everything to work if I do not run the last Maxis game patch.  With the patch, everything just goes to heck.  Try reinstalling without running the patch and see if that helps.  Of course, playing the game without the patch and the plugins that rely on the patch is not as much fun.

I've updated my drivers, and if it crashes again, I will post the exception log. I will try running with intro on, and off. And under each compatibility mode.

Yes, I did try the solutions you listed above. And I was running firefox in the background, half expecting it not to work. I am currently looking to buy more memory for my laptop.

Yea, I'm looking to upgrade to 2GB of RAM. I also had a disk defrag going at the time. I just tried running the game again, without anything running in the background, and I am still getting the same problem.

I just tried running agian, this time, closing ObjectDock, and Ubericon. Same problem continues to occur weather I have the intro on or off.

I've noticed that the game comes up in the task bar, then my screen goes black, then it goes back to the desktop, and its not there anymore. I have nothing running in the background. It couldn't be a missing file from the intro, seeing as how I have uninstalled and reinstalled many, many times. I have checked, and it is the same access violation in all my exception logs.

Go to the start menu, select run, type in dxdiag and hit enter. Tell me what the stuff in the System Information area says, and if there are any problems reported in the other tabs (display, sound, etc.)

I just tried running again, this time with nothing running at all (other than things that need to be running), and still nothing.

I have heard of problems with SimCity 4 running on AMD processors but I rather doubt that would be the problem. You could try emailing EA but I don't think they'd be of any help. You could also ask HP but I don't think they'd be helpful either.

i believe your problem is that laptops tend to require more RAM to run programs due to the graphics card monopolizing the RAM...though you should still have enough RAM with absolutely nothing else running...

Yea, I would have upgraded the RAM already, but it is not my laptop. I'd rather wait until I have a laptop of my own (saving up for one, for college), and buy more for that one if needed.
