I just got back from San Diego a few hours ago. I was visiting UCSD in La Jolla because I'm thinking about going to school there in a year. It's a really cool town. The navy base is awesome, but it gets annoying when your around the harbor and every 5 minutes there's a helicopter flying over... 3.gif

the airport is cool being right next to the downtown area. it was cloudy when we arrived, and I remember looking out the plane window seeing the clouds, then we go through them and we're flying right by the buildings! really cool.

the beaches are nice too. lots of surfers.

your region looks awesome! looking at the maps I have from my trip it looks really accurate.

I'm going to have to request that you send your San Diego region to me, hehe. Your San Francisco region was just so amazing that I can't wait to see what you do with San Diego.
One question, are you going to include the San Diego Trolley?

In some areas yes, in others (downtown grid) it will be replaced by the subway.  This map is a little scaled down from accurate scale so minor sacrifices will have to be made.  I just re-found the trolley map so it's up again on the first page of this CJ.

http://www.sdcommute.com/  is a very informative website with great maps.

No fancy story or anything, just cold hard pics.

Close up of downtown with streets, freeways labeled.  Balboa Park is the tree'd area.  Still have a lot more streets out of the downtown area to place.

Do any of you who are familiar with San Diego, think Balboa Park & Downtown should be a little wider?

this might be helpful for you.
the downtown highways should be ground highways beneath the surface. if you want, i can take a picture of my downtown (which is actually san diego with a different name) to show you what i mean.

Yeah I remember concrete & grass embankments on either side of the 5 when traveling through downtown SD.  I tried what you've recommended at first, but when I couldn't fit all the exits and streets/rail/roads that need to go across the freeways there wasn't enough room with those road overpasses it creates.  I just gave it another shot after you posted that, but now that I've fit all the exits, etc in the ground level highways block direct roads that should be there.  Great picture though, I'll use that as a reference when I zone.

downtown i-5 is weird, it's a raised ground level highway, in that the ground it's on has been raised into a terrace on the hills usually, and then the other streets pass under it until first, then it becomes a ground level highway.  to get the right look for 5, it should probably just be a raised highway, that's the most representative of the on-ramps anyway.

163 is just a 2-lane ground highway in the bottom of a canyon, that kind of splits into 2 streets after it hits 5.  you've done as well as SC4 will let you do with the 163 i think though.

and given the map, it looks like you have the scale just about right.  everything seems to be lining up with the right geographic features anyway.

    Thanks for the affirmation guys.

Here's some more of the transportation development I've done east of San Diego.  Since there is only transportation going on, I'm going to start labeling areas and landmarks to WOW you all with my great Photoshop abilities <ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/images/smilies/2.gif>

    /idealbb/files/sdregionalprogress12.jpg

I really admire you people who are recreating cities that are inland.  The one thing that is such a pain about this region is placing all the roads that are away from the water because there is only elevation locations to base everything off of.  Imagine the frustration I would have if I chose to recreation Edmonton or something <ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/images/smilies/2.gif>

This is looking great and all, but we need something other than travel maps. This entire cj is filled with travel maps! Start the city already! Show us pics of cities!

i think the toughest thing about doing san diego to scale would be not just diving straight into La Jolla or Pacific Beach.

it does look like the roads are coming along rather quickly at least, given how messed up SD's road system really is. <ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/images/smilies/1.gif>

Sorry for the long time between updates, haven't had a lot of spare time but I did manage to get a good chunk in today.

    /idealbb/files/sdregionalprogress13.jpg

Chula Vista is a $%&^! to recreate because of the off angle grid structure it has.  You can see my attempt at Broadway/Beyer (same road) coming down from National City into Otay Mesa, I tried to get it as straight and consistant with 1 angle as possible until L street.

Not too much more transportation to go until I can start building.. which city/area shall I start first?

my favorite part of the city would have to be pacific beach/mission beach/mission bay, that'd have to be my vote for starting point.  that or old town, since it was one of the first areas to grow up anyway.  1.gif

OK, I am finally done with the transportation for the most part and will begin on zoning and placing landmarks, etc.  The only part I haven't fully developed is Cockatoo Grove / Eastlake which is East of Bonita.  I hear they are expanding the SR-125 area shown below.  I'll develop that towards the end of this CJ, as it is one of the newest areas in San Diego.

Sorry there has been no updates recently, I just moved into my new house (pictured below) and have been really busy getting settled in and what not. As soon as I get any sort of free time I'll re-start San Diego and finish it off. It might be slow going, but it will conclude.

That was the families who lived there before we bought it.  They were having another kid so the home wasn't big enough.

I've also created a .zip file that has the entire region the way it appears above, without zoning, etc... only roads/freeway/rail.  If you'd like to get a copy of it I'll distribute it through MSN Messenger File Transfer only, so you must have an account - but they are free.  You can message me at shanem78@hotmail.com .

It's 1025x1025.  The .zip file is a little over 18MB.

Like SFv2, upon completion I'll be releasing a complete version of this region.

the only things that look like they might need correcting would be Balboa Ave (the old CA 274) should definitely be an avenue, and it looks more like a road on the map.  it has partial cloverleaf interchanges at Morena Blvd, I-15 and CA-163, and a full cloverleaf at the I-805 interchange.  it was at one point planned to be upgraded to a full freeway, but CA-52 was built instead.

the other correction might be near the 52/163 interchange, is Kearny Villa Road (the old US 395, replaced by I-15) isn't visable as it crosses the 163 up into miramar.  even though i doubt it will effect gameplay, it's my usual route home from work.  1.gif

If you want information on San Diego demographics, here's where to go:

Digital Atlas of San Diego (check the Income section for some maps to plan out the residential wealth levels)
    http://130.166.124.2/SD_1.html

    Income maps:

You also might want to check out the US Census 2000.

I see what you mean with Balboa @ Morena.  Thanks for the tip, I'm sure changing it to an avenue will improve traffic flow greatly too.  I'll have to continue Kearny Villa Rd north into Miramar as well.  It looks like I'll have to learn how to use the PEG CDK lots in order to make this aesthetically pleasing as possible.

Thanks for the links quito, those were very useful, especially the first one!. 51.gif

i just was playing around with your san diego region, and rebuilt the CA-52/CA-125/mission gorge interchange as close to right as i could in SC4.  here's a screenshot.

    /idealbb/files/52-125int.jpg

you might want to do it that way, since the 125 basically ends into mission gorge ave, but does have freeway-grade ramps in between.  and there's no ramp on prospect this way.

i know the maps are confusing with that part, i hope that helps.

Thanks for the suggestions.  I've updated my region to reflect them.

    Balboa Blvd into an avenue.
    /idealbb/files/balboablvd.jpg

    Corrected the 125/52 Interchange.
    /idealbb/files/12552interchange.jpg
    /idealbb/files/12552.jpg

I've decided to start out with the Downtown San Diego region.  As the region will need a base city to develop and feed off of... what better city tile to start with?

Here's a shot of somewhere east of East Park Plaza on Coronado Island... (that's 4th street in the upper right corner, and Orange Ave in the upper left)
