Imperial Beach, Nestor and San Ysidro generally have very low and flat (15-30ft) rolling hills that run parallel to the beach, which flatten out closer to the water

Chula Vista, National City, and western Otay Mesa have larger and steeper (20-80ft) but fewer hills with large shallow valleys, which also generally run parallel to the water

the Sweetwater River runs parallel (actually in between) CA-54 between I-5 and I-805

the area immediately on the and south and east bank (CV and NC area) of San Diego Bay is flat and marshy, much of this is marine reserve

the western edge of San Ysidro (south of the Navy's IB helicopter airfield) consists of strawberry fields, with the exception of the Coral Gate development

south of IB and the strawberry fields all the way to the border is very flat and marshy, this is the Tijuana River Estuary Reserve

there are some very narrow (5ft across) land strips that criss-cross the southern end of SD Bay, this is also a marine reserve

there is a small SDG&E (gas? not sure) power plant, a service rail line for the plant, and a salt extractor in the southeast corner of SD Bay

the Otay River empties into the southern tip of SD Bay
remember to try to put in the Otay Reseviors (both of them)

this entire area has scattered trees, heaviest around the rivers

in the northeast end of Imperial Beach there is an elephant cage (radio station) owned by the U.S. Navy

also, the Navy rigged a part of Silver Strand with explosives, in case the Coronado Bridge collapsed and couldn't be moved in an emergency
(if you can't somehow put that in i understand3.gif)

i live in Nestor (that part of South San Diego in between IB and Otay), which at 3 miles north of the border isn't dirt poor but is still pretty ghetto

the entire southwestern corner of the county (Nat'l City, western Chula Vista, Imperial Beach, Otay Mesa, and San Ysidro) is relatively poor, with lots of medium density housing, small-medium businesses, scattered (almost none) low-density industries, a good amount of petty crime (mainly graffiti and vandalism), and maybe a golf course or two

eastern San Ysidro (between I-5 and the junkyard/Brown Mun. Airfield) seems to get poorer as it gets farther from the I-5 border crossing

eastern Chula Vista is rich (or at least it seems like it with the new developments): much of this area is medium-density housing with scattered low-medium business centers (marts and fast-food) and practically no industry/farms
[basically the same as Eastlake]

I want to thank you for putting this map on the MEX, I couldn't get it to work from the other source. I noticed that your missing a freeway in the South Bay, the 905. It runs west to east starting at 5, runs across Otay Mesa. Other than this description, you'll have to look at a map.

Looks great!

I think everyone has answered your questions regarding certain areas of the city with the exception of Serra Mesa. Luckily, I live there!

It is mostly R$$ with some R$ (in terms of the appearance of the housing. The actual home costs would be R$$$ anywhere else in the country). If my home were in SC4, it would be R$$, yet it is worth $400,000+. San Diego real estate is ridiculous right now!

And I'm glad to see you built Mission Center Road down from Serra Mesa to Friars Road. Are you gonna make it go under the 805 and connect to Murray Ridge Road? I hope so. That route is my secret backway to Mission Valley. 1.gif

Sorry there hasn't been any updates in awhile.  My girlfriend and I have made an offer on a home and I'll be spending a lot of my time making sure the purchase process goes smoothly.  Therefore I possibly will be spending very little time on SC4 over the next month.  Thanks for the tips on the transportation, and you are right, I definately forgot the 905 freeway just north of San Ysidro and east of Imperial Beach.  I'll have to add that and the rest of the major roads, trolley system, etc...

I live in PB, mostly R$$ with lots of bars and surf shops. Mission Beach is R$$ almost R$$$. OB (which isn't on your map) is also R$$ but, OB is a little more earthy than the other beach communities; you will need a farmer's market. The only other thing I see is on the map for PetCo Park, it shows the 805 going into downtown, that should be the 163. Everything else looks good. Good luck.

something that's not too easy to see on the maps, but might be cool to re-create, is Pacific Highway coming out of downtown also. I noticed it's not drawn yet, but it really would best be represented by a ground highway in some areas where it's parallel to I-5 (near the airport).

Since I moved out here this has struck me as a really unique thing. Most cities don't keep the old freeway around when they build a new one, but it's a fast way to get in/out of the Rosecrans/I-5 area to downtown without dealing with I-5 at rush hour. =)

Here's a little update, only have spent less than an hour since my last post but I've put in some more roads and the PCH freeway that runs parallel to I-5 near the airport and I've also started on the downtown grid.

The roads are looking very good - I can see the route I took today downtown, along the bay up to Point Loma, up to Pacific Beach, and onto 5->52 to get home.

Very cool. You've got me waiting for more. 1.gif

Looks good. Hope you include the hotel downtown where those hookers robbed my friend and I. Poor little recruits from RTC. 2.gif

Everything looks great so far. I was stationed at Camp Pendelton from '95 to '99 and got to San Diego often. Its still one of my favorite cities in the U.S.! I'll definitely be following this journal!9.gif

Sorry there has been no updates recently, I just moved into my new house and have been really busy getting settled in and what not.  As soon as I get any sort of free time I'll re-start San Diego and finish it off.  It might be slow going, but it will conclude.

Congrats on the house, it looks nice!

Thanks for letting us know, I was starting to wonder if you'd given up on it or something. The terrain is very challenging - I'm currently taking a break from my try at that terrain.

I've managed to fit a little bit of SC4 time in lately, but since the only thing I'm doing right now is the transportation system, that's the only thing you're going to see for awhile.

Northwest of La Mesa.  Mission Gorge Rd cutting through the mountains, westward expansion of Navajo Rd.
    /idealbb/files/sdregionalprogress6.jpg

Serra Mesa.  Eastern expansion of Friar's Rd.
    /idealbb/files/sdregionalprogress7.jpg

Otay Mesa/San Ysidro.  Ocean View Hills Pkwy turning into Palm Rd. running into the Pacific Ocean.

You might find this link useful. Especially if you want to get a head start on some of the freeways they're going to build or extend.

    Thanks for the link UCSB.

San Diego is in Southern California, a few miles north of the US-Mexico border.

Zoning and utilities development probably won't occur for at least another week.  Since I don't know San Diego as well as San Francisco, it's a lot harder for me to wing the transportation system while I'm developing, so I'm laying all that out before hand this time.  Here's some updated transportation in La Mesa and near SDSU.

You're doing a really amazing job, just looking at the road pictures I can name nearly every road you've laid. If you can keep it up, I think you'll top San Francisco with this one.

If I could BAT I'd work on the Harbor Towers or NBC Tower, but I'm pretty useless at 3d stuff. If any SD stuff comes out do you plan on using it?

Point Loma is a mixture of all 3 residential. The hills being $$$ and the shore being $. Commercial there is $ (mainly geared for the Navy). The point itself inland (bayview) is the Sub Base. On the Ocean view is Coast Guard (Lighthouse) and the Top is Navy Communications. No secrets there that I know of. I know MCRD is still there but haven't a clue what happened to NTC after the base closure.

Latest progress update.  Hope you guys like roads, because that's all that'll be posted for the next week or so.  I got University Ave turning into Washington St hitting the 5.  Started Park Bl. running north out of downtown into what will be Balboa Park.  I liked creating 43rd St running parallel to Fairmount Ave in East San Diego, it was fun following the paths with the USGS map.

I'm getting pretty anxious to start the development... especially laying the roads around this area... but I'll be patient, hope you guys will too.

It seems like this journal has gotten more of a response than the San Francisco recreation I did.  Do all/any of you guys live in San Diego (area)?

Sorry the updates have been lacking this week, tons of stuff popped up at work and I've been hitting the sack by 10:30 every night.  I'm did/going to do some more transportation this evening but I won't get around to posting anymore pics until Sat or Sun.
