Owens Island is my second CJ. The Ferrington CJ is kinda turning into just a series of screenshots so I wanted to make one with a little more back story and detail on the region and its cities. So here we go, my first post will detail some of the . . .

History of Owens Island

In 1798 an uncharted and uninhabited island in the north Pacific was discovered by a Captain L. B. Owens of the ship Eastern Traveler. Owens and his crew explored, mapped, and charted the heavily forested island.

The first map of Owens Island, made by an unknown member of Captain Owens' crew.

The island remained uninhabited and unnamed for the next 120 years. In 1918 while exploring for new reserves the International Mining and Steel company began conducting mineral surveys of the island to determine the possibility of mining there, discovering large reserves of coal, iron, and other minerals in the northwest quadrant.

An early aerial photo of Owens Island, for the IMS company, taken by an unknown photographer.

IMS claimed the island, to be named Owens Island after its discoverer, and began to lay plans for the start of operations on the island . . .

Looks like a good region to play. I look forward to seeing the island develop. Your mining story is a good premise for a new colony. Interesting image manipulation too.

History of Owens Island - Part Two

1919 - Owens Island: IMS Company is proud to announce the grand opening of Owens Mine 1, marking the commencement of mining operations on Owens Island.

The jobs provided by the opening of Mine 1 at Owens Mines spurred the construction of a small rail depot as well as the growth of a small residential district near the depot.

1921 - Owens Island: The abundance of coal from the Owens Mine, along with the demand from the mine and the town has allowed the IMS Company to construct Owens Island's first coal-fired power plant. The IMS Company held a grand opening celebration with a town picnic and tours of the new plant.

Whoever kept those photographs was really careless with the coffee!!! It's a great touch. Maybe they sould be put in a museum to prevent them being used as coasters! Nice update.

History of Owens Island - Part Three

Here's some more pictures I've pulled out of the Owens Island archives, and the history behind them. These photos show how the town has grown in the five years since the opening of the power generating station. It seems that the same careless coffee-loving archivist must have handled these photos as well.

The IMS Company has built a new steel mill complex along with a large freight depot to process and move all of the metals and coal from the mines.

    owenssteelmilltt1.jpg

The new steel mill complex and rail depot.

The town has been redesigned with a new downtown incorporating the first school and library, a police station and fire station, and a passenger rail station, as well as shops, offices, and restaurants. The residential population is booming as well. Row houses for the mine and mill workers as well as middle and upper class homes for management have been built surrounding downtown.

Finally able to post the update, wasn't able to do it two nights ago then last night ST wouldn't let me on all night. Anyways, here's the update:

History of Owens Island - Part Four

South of Owens Mines you'll find Owensport. These pictures depict Owensport as it looked in 1926, same year as the previous update's shots of Owens Mines. At that time the city consisted only of the port facility and a rail depot.

    portoverviewjq6.jpg

    An overview of the docks.

    raildepotzt9.jpg

    The Owensport freight depot.

Coal was a major product of Owens Island's mining industry:

    coaldocksgj1.jpg

Coal staged at the docks awaiting loading.

    shiplaunchingnm6.jpg

One of the large coal bulkers being launched on its maiden voyage at the Owensport docks.

    coalshipov0.jpg

Another bulker sailing into port for a full load of coal.

As you can see, mining and its related industries played a major part in the history of Owens Island. But will things stay that way on Owens Island or is the old way of things here destined to change . . .

Hi everyone. I'm feeling kinda uninspired as to what to make the next update about, so I thought I'd open it up to the community. Tell me where you want to see Owens Island go from here, what aspects you'd like to see more of, or any other suggestions on what to show for the next update. Thanks!
