Tim Russert, anchor of the popular Sunday morning show "Meet the Press" on NBC, suddenly collapsed earlier today at the studio. He had a heart attack and died. He was 58. His father is still alive...

Surprising to say the least. If you remotely followed politics over the past 15+ years, you know who Tim Russert is. He was truly one of the better personalities in the news media and he'll be missed.

The local newscasters here are a bit shaken up.  They were in the building when it happened and had seen him earlier in the day.  They say he had finished taping a segment for a cable news show and was working on this week's Meet the Press.

Very sad to lose someone at such a young age.

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing.    - Pope Francis

He died at such a young age!

We have lost a neutral voice in the extreme ones.

Oh no! I loved Tim Russert. People said he was the most brilliant mind on television. How sad...

I know that "me too" posts are usually frowned upon around here, but I'd like to take a minute to say that I agree with the general sentiment expressed so far - Tim was one of the better, if not best, voices in political news. If there was one thing you could count on him doing, it was being as neutral as possible.

Political news just went down a notch. 15.gif

Indeed.  Watching him, I could believe he was working to get at the issues instead of pushing a particular agenda.

In an interview, his doctor said he died of a heart attack.  (He used more elaborate medical language but that's what it boiled down to)

I haven't seen a picture of it online but one of the tributes left at the news station was a bouquet of flowers along with a small whiteboard saying "Tim, We will miss you".

For those who didn't watch him, he starting using the whiteboard when the graphics department couldn't keep up with the election results.

I believe his "Florida, Florida, Florida" whiteboard is in the Smithsonian

I heard a report that an autopsy is planned. Not that foul play is suspected. Apparently he just returned from an overseas trip via a long air flight. Thrombosis is a possibility.

I was in the hospital last night for a couple hours due to heart problems and the news gave it an extra jolt. He came across to me as a blue-collar raised guy with a strong work ethic. He appeared to take what he did seriously and tried to hold everybody he interviewed accountable. The other newscasters I listened to really appeared to be in awe of him.

Yikes I forgot to ask my wife to tape it!

(I'm fine now btw 10.gif )

Russert talked a lot about his father "Big Russ" and his son Luke. Especially on Father's Day and at their ages I feel saddened by them having to experience it and now the rest of their lives w/out their son/father.

Buffalo will miss him. He was the city's biggest supporter and always tried to show it in a good light.
