No they can't. I don't think there is a tool that can either.

Actually there is a method. You first zone it the appropriate zone for the building density you wish to plop, then while the game is running you plop what you wish. Its worked for me, but it only works in some cases. But you will find that even though your population increases, no commuters emerge from the buildings and they really don't do much except add traffic and take jobs, which I suppose is alright, but don;t expect your public transport to be used.

I use loads of plops. What I tend to do is finish the city Im playing except for my planned plops. I then pause the game and plop all of my res buildings. After doing that I sim it for a month to get the pop. but there should be a no job sign which is where I exit the city as these buildings will just dilipidate. I mainly use my plopped res buildings for asthetic effect.

The only way to make sure it always works is to plop them over existing residential buildings. What I do is zone an area, let it grow, then plop over everything that doesn't belong.

It's pretty time consuming, but the only way to get the exact buildings you want.

The problem with ploppable residential is the fact that Sims are unable to "get out" of the buildings to travel to work. This is why they abandon. Plopping them over existing residential seems to work since the travel paths are already established. But even this is tricky sometimes, and if the building ever dilapidates or abandons, it'll never get demolished or re-inhabited.

hey folks, i'm replying to this because this is somehow connected with my problem: is there any chance i can keep a building from being overbuild with another one? i'm rigth now working on a realistic looking city (kinda hongkong style) but i'm getting worried about the game which refuses to make my buildings historical and keep their status. greetings, rick

What the heck? EVERYONE here is wrong! All buildings that are ploppable residential can be lived in. For example, if I start a new city, plop a couple of Somy's Japanese houses, and let the game run for about a sim-month, my population will increase. Jeesh, this community is getting more unintelligent by the second.

By the way MastaRick, don't hi-jack other people's forums, start one of your own.

well, there's a way to plop residental buildings in a way that sims live there:

    cheating.

the building has to be a building that's actually a growable, tho. (a real ploppable residental building won't be used)

if you plop them with the buildingplop cheat, the buildings are not abandoned.

instead, they rush to 100% occupation at once. only thing that happens is that the # of inhabitants goes down about 10% after one game month or two.

but then, it stays on the aproximately 90% of the buidlings maximum capacity.

EDIT: if the building is properly connected to the infrastructure of the city (streets, electricity, water)

Thanks for offending everyone here. I don't know how Somy designed his Japanese houses, but if as another user pointed out, he made them growable and ploppable, the ploppable versions may work. But a purely ploppable res building DOES NOT work. Try to make a residential plop that doesn't exist as a growable and see. It won't work properly.
