I have just recently been reading some comments on the forum for Chicago high rise construction on skyscraperpage.com and I noticed that some people are acting like the high rise construction in Chicago is CRASHING. However, when I go to www.emporis.com, I noticed that there are currently over 79 high rises being proposed for Chicago as well as some 30 high rises already being approved for construction in Chicago.

So, how do you feel the high rise constrcution industry in Chicago is headed for?

Emporis is quite out of date. I can see 3 constructions in Denver that exceed the 50m mark (I think one is actually a renovation), they were weeks behind the announcement that construction had restarted on the Spire (it was only about a week before construction restarted that they listed it on hold), and the do not have the Four Seasons Tower listed yet despite the fact plans are finalized, renderings exist, and approval is granted.

But, back to the topic of Chicago, they might not put them up as quickly, but as life-limited buildings start maturing, there will be no choice but to continue the build up.

I feel the opposite is happening. There are so many projects going on compared to 10 years ago, especially in the south loop and west loop.

read the arcchicago blog. Lynn Becker hasn't mentioned anything about any projects being in trouble at this point.

I haven't heard anything about any projects stalling.

But, with the credit markets collapsing, anything is possible, and the ramifications of credit drying up could be felt pretty much anywhere in the world. Except Dubai.

lol, as someone who lives in chicago, the high rise market has been amazingly resislient, that being said i number of approved project will likely never get built due to tailing demand (mandarin oriental comes to mind). However that doesn't mean that dozens of impressive talls and 3 supertalls aren't underconstruction, Spire sales abroad have been brisk and likely benefiting from a weak dollar. Chicago is an international city and will become more so as foreigners look to the city as an investment oppurtunity given the weak dollar and low prices. Off the top of my head, Trump, Aqua, Spire, Waterview, One museum Park, 300n Lasalle all under construction and will be completed, however projects waiting in the wings will likely not be built typical eb and flow of the real estate market. BTW i much prefer skyscrapercity to skyscraperpage.
