Search google for "The GIMP" it's free, and for the purposes of texture making, has the same capabilities.

Without an image editing program, you'll be spending hours on google trying to find a texture that "will do." With one, you can just spend 20 minutes making a custom texture that will look a lot better.

I think you need to be a bit more specific with your question but here is what I think is the answer your'e loking for.

You do not need Photoshop to use a texture in Gmax. Some Batters use Photoshop however to modify a texture to help if appear more like the In-game textures or to age the appearance of a building . Do a search for "textutes" I know there are a phew good tutorials on this site you should read.

Hope that helps

Mntoes.

Yep, a .jpg, .bmp, .png, .psd, and other image files will work. In the omnibus there are tutorials that explain the basics. After you understand everything in the "BAT Essentials" tutorial, you can check out the tutorials in my signature.

The windows should be BATted not drawn on as a texture, a box with a picture pasted on to it looks exactly that in the game - a box with a picture pasted on. Most of the good quality BATs you see have all the structural details modelled, and then those details textured. As others have suggested I recommend checking out the BATting Tutorials in the omnibus and in this forum.

You will also need to ensure that the textures you use tile properly, ie where they meet at the edges the patterns continue smoothly onto the next tile or pattern. Repeating artifacts in a pattern can be a problem too. For example you may have a nice wood grain pattern that looks great as one tile, but when you repeat it to cover the whole deck, you find its got a big dark patch in the middle and very light edges that makes the deck look as if its got polka dots.

I've made textures from photos, and its a lot of hard work. Even something such as a slight camera angle can ruin the image beyond usability. But even if you use premade textures you will need to do a certain amount of manipulating, eg cropping, resizing etc.

There are image editors around that are not too expensive or free that do most of the basic functions you will need. I here GIMP is good, and free. I use paintshop pro which is great and doesn't cost as much as photoshop.
