    PROGRESS IN NORTH GRANTBORO

    REPLIES:

    rainyday: Thanks.

danielcote: That's the way it's supposed to work.

ComputerGuy: The main city will come by the end of March.

    Muck308: Thank you.

Axun proper has not been built yet, but a suburb city, North Grantboro, is currently being constructed, and I thought it may be interesting to see my work in progress.

    Here's the location:

    4.jpg

Moving to the residential development, we find a well-developed, young area, with a lot of unemployment! I guess Axun will need to be built soon 2.gif:

    1-1.jpg

Eastward, there is a developing island, with rather incomplete seawalls on the other side:

    2.jpg

Notice the avenue bridge, with connects it to the outside world.

And lastly, a new creation of mine:

    3.jpg

I call it a left-ramped central roundabout interchange, and it has been featured in the Show Us Your Interchanges! thread.

That's all for today. And, yes, I know about the image problems. My photobucket account has exceeded its bandwidth for the month, and everything should be back to normal in 7 days.

Please post comments, suggestions, and questions.

I had a similar problem a while back. One thing I did was start a second photobucket account, then split my pictures between them. I just thought that might help.

    THE BUILDING OF AXUN BEGINS

    REPLIES:

ComputerGuy: Thanks. I see you're excited about the roundabouts. More of them will come, some of them in a form that has never been seen in the Showcase before 2.gif (an experiment on request for a personality named Ironzer)

crushedcar: Haljackey, as well as me and you, all had similar problems, and thought up similar solutions. Thanks for the advice, anyway, but I observed Haljackey's first 1.gif.

Axun is coming along very well, and ComputerGuy may be relieved that the residents of North Grantboro found jobs in West Axun. Before the cities are showcased, however, here's a region view:

    1-5.jpg

The red line will help you with orientation later 2.gif.

In South Axun, due to demands for jobs, a commercial district has been constructed to the east of the elevated development:

    2-4.jpg

And now the development itself. Note the overhead lights, and median, which will soon be filled in with concrete:

    3-3.jpg

Also note the red markings on the elevated avenue.

To the west, along the elevated avenue, there is another elevated area next to the roundabout interchange. More beautification will be added soon:

    4-3.jpg

The houses are rather unique in Patian County, as there has been no development solely consisting of them.

Moving on to the formerly jobless area, we see the problem has been remedied with more commercial development and an elevated rail:

    5-2.jpg

Northward now, to West Axun, there is a commercial area, but is currently restricted to medium density because of the planned future prominence of Central Axun:

    6.jpg

This may be one of the few developments in Patian County which will be rebuilt completely 2.gif.

Next to this development, and dwarfing it, is the cloverstack interchange between the two freeways running through Western Axun:

    7.jpg

East of here, there is another commercial development, this one here to stay, which is a continuation of another city's district:

    8.jpg

And, lastly, a sneak peak at the emerging Axun city center, with its developing ring road surrounding it:

    9.jpg

Will this serve as a catalyst for a large urban center?

Also, in the next update, there will be a completely new way of numbering freeways in the region, one that is more logical and expandable than the past system.

And lastly, if you highlight the replies section, you'll see something interesting 4.gif.

Please post comments, suggestions, and questions.

Patricius, I can't help but notice that the cloverstack has four pointless ramps. 3.gif As in there are multiple ways to go the same direction.

Otherwise, some very nice interchanges and lots of neat new developments. I'm noticing quite a few new custom BATs, such as those wonderful houses.

    THE NEW FREEWAY NUMERATION SYSTEM

    REPLIES:

deathtopumpkins: 1) Oops, I didn't notice that. Anyway, it has since been replaced in a new realignment.

    2) Thanks. Yes, more BATs are popping up.

    Twenty20: Thank you.

Taking some ideas from the British numeration system for their roads, I have decided to rework the numeration system for Patian County. The previous collage of numbers for City Routes, State Routes, Freeways, and Expressways have been removed. There is now a unified system across the whole County. I will only deal with freeways for this update.

There still remains a distinction between expressways and freeways, but their numbering has been combined, into a three-tiered system:

Trunk Routes - these freeways are given single-digit numbers

Primary Routes - these are given two-digit numbers

Secondary Routes - these are given three-digit numbers

There are also zones which govern what the first digit will be for a primary or secondary freeway in that zone. There are currently 6 zones. Trunk routes are excluded from zone requirements.

There can be 10 primary freeways in one zone -- for instance, in zone 1 there would be 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, and 19. There are no primary numbers ending in 0.

Secondary freeways are three-digit numbers, usually taken from the primary it branches off of, and adding a number to the end, for instance, Freeway 412 would have 41 as its parent. Expressways are always placed in this category, if they are sufficiently long.

Lastly, if there are insufficient numbers for all the freeways in a given zone, the zone will be split up.

And here is a map of all freeways in Patian County with their respective numbers and zones. Primary and Trunk routes are in blue, secondaries are in purple:

    SOUTH CREEKMOUTH REVEALED

    REPLY:

    Rainyday: Thanks.

Well, today is April 16, precisely 19 days since the last update. But I have been very busy with Patian County during that time. There are two all-new areas to show.

But, they are so large and complex, the question is which one to choose for this update? I arrived at a logical answer: start at the northwest quadrant, and move southeast. So, here is that location - South Creekmouth:

    1-97.jpg

First, we begin in Creekmouth proper with the northern terminus of an as-yet-unnumbered freeway:

    2-76.jpg

It continues south next to a commercial area, and intersects with an avenue via a parclo interchange:

    3-59.jpg

Furthur along, in South Creekmouth, there is a stack interchange with a terminating RHW freeway. Note the new NAM highway ramps:

    4-46.jpg

Veering southwestward along the terminating highway, we see the center of South Creekmouth itself, inhabiting a peninsula created months ago, flanked by sandy beaches:

    5-37.jpg

In the southern part of the city, there is another parclo, on one side a residential district, on the other a commercial one, and one side populated by trees:

    6-25.jpg

That is all for South Creekmouth. But, lastly, two semi-random pictures from other areas of Patian County.

This is one from a new reconstruction in East Oakland, a one-way parclo interchange at sunset:

    7-19.jpg

It was intended to be placed in the SC4D picture contest, but I never got around to it.

The second one is a picture of a freeway terminating into an arterial road, via a hybrid of the parclo/diamond hybrid, and a roundabout interchange:

    8-13.jpg

    That's all for this update.

Please post comments, suggestions, and questions.

    EASTLAKE

    REPLY:

jonpaulosiglos: I'm glad you like the custom buildings. They are a recent "addition".

Moving southward in the tour of the new areas, we encounter Eastlake. Eastlake is so named because it is on the eastern bank of the lake, on the opposite shore from Lakeview.

    1-99.jpg

Entering the city from South Creekmouth, we encounter an unusual and rather unique RHW/FHW parclo interchange, next to a sanitation area (beautification will be coming soon 2.gif):

    2-78.jpg

In the RHW thread, Mrtnrln suggested the creation of puzzle pieces that connect the FHW to MIS ramps. Now I realize the use of it.

Panning east, we see the beaches on the shore, as well as a dense development of condominiums and apartments:

    3-60.jpg

Centering our view on the freeway, there is a section of sound walls as well as a pair of roundabouts:

    4-48.jpg

Southward, there is a modified paperclip interchange, with a roundabout at the usually free-flowing end:

    5-38.jpg

In the southwest quadrant of the city, there is a commercial district, which serves many of the population's job needs:

    6-26.jpg

Access to the commercial district is done via a spur freeway, which begins at this volleyball interchange:

    7-20.jpg

The high-capacity 8-lane freeway curves into a roundabout where it terminates:

    8-14.jpg

The spur has served not only Eastlake, but all of Patian County, by demonstrating an efficient way of moving more than 10,000 commuters twice a day with little congestion problems, and thus can serve as a prototype for solutions to other emerging bottlenecks.

Please post comments, suggestions, and questions.

    EAST RIVERTON

    REPLIES:

    jacqulina: Thanks.

Tmiguel: I'm glad I was an inspiration for you, and thanks for your compliments.

    jonpaulosiglos: Thank you.

Well, it appears that I'm drifting back in a roughly weekly schedule, as was intended 5 months ago, in December. I would also like to say to aspiring city journalists that this page is a perfect case of the value of persistence. Do not be discouraged by one or no replies in an update. Keep updating, and if they are good, the replies will come.

On another note, today I will be showcasing East Riverton, the long-delayed extension of Riverton proper:

    7e3629be.jpg

Riverton was developed as an organically-grown mixed-zone city, with residential, commercial, and industrial zones, and with the actual gameplay in mind. East Riverton happens to have an average income of 120 000, and relatively low tax rates. I'm sure many of you viewers would find it a nice place.

Beginning as always along the north-south highway, there is an odd parclo interchange, and a stack to the south:

    1-104.jpg

You can also see an industrial area to the east. This snapshot in particular, reminds me of the Greater Terran Region, which, I must confess, has on occasion been an inspiration to me.

Below is a close-up of the stack. It is a typical NAM stack, with the HRS texturing:

    2-82.jpg

South of the stack, an RHW terminates at a Maxis T interchange, and the highway cuts through a commercial and industrial district:

    3-63.jpg

West of here, the commercial district connects to the residential via a parclo:

    4-51.jpg

Progressing northwest, we see a significant power source for the city: wind and solar plants, as well as a sanitation area:

    5-40.jpg

And here is the sanitation area, along with three fission reactors:

    6-29.jpg

East of the parclo is a residential district, mainly composed of apartments, that is sandwiched between two highways:

    7-21.jpg

Off to the northwest, there is an interesting interchange, a partial trumpet interchange connected to the main avenue by a roundabout. Although it is partial (but will be fixed soon), it serves all traffic movements necessary:

    8-15.jpg

Progressing to the north of the city, we see the main residential district:

    9-10.jpg

    10-8.jpg

    That's all for now.

Please post comments, suggestions, and questions.

    Great Update!

The odd parclo interchange sure looks confusing yet realistic.

The partlia trumpet interchange looks Great but i was trying to figure out How was the path... LoL. I just saw that the upper ramp was an exit Ramp 3.gif. It sure looks tricky when you use that HRS texturing.

I'll be looking forward to see the next update

Even though the overall region looks plain, your city planning, eyecandy and transportation looks great! That's what I love about this showcase, its about actually playing simcity, and not worrying about making the world look really nice. Of course, gotta love good scenery. ^^

SOUTHEAST RIVERTON AND AN UNCERTAIN INTERCHANGE

    REPLIES:

    TmiguelT: Thanks for your comments.

Twenty20: Glad you think it's "impressive". I'll surely keep up my good work.

Archean: Yes, this Showcase is about playing Simcity, more specifically building cities. Of course, I work to make it not look badly, but there is not an excess of eyecandy.

    jacqulina: Thanks.

Well, this update contains a little city, Southeast Riverton, but a big question, which will come furthur in this update. Here is the location of the city:

    1-113.jpg

The only thing here in this city is a commercial district, created to provide an extra source of jobs to East Riverton, as that city did not have enough of them for the residents. Below is the commercial district:

    3-66.jpg

Over to the right, is a strange interchange which I'm not precisely sure what to do with:

    2-90.jpg

Since I am at a loss of what to put here, I will put it up to a vote for you, the viewers, to decide. The choices will be:

    • Diamond
    • SPUI
    • Folded Diamond
    • Partial Cloverleaf
    • Cloverleaf
    • Stack
    • Cloverstack
    • Turbine
    • Roundabout
    • Stacked Roundabout
    • Other
The poll will be open until 12:00 UTC on 11 May 2009, next Monday. Please vote in the poll. The future of the area depends on you making a good choice.

Please post comments, suggestions, and questions.

Well it depends....is the cross-artery important enough for free-flow ramps? If so, I'd go with a turbine; if not, I'd like to see a SPUI.

SE Riverton looks great by the way, though a little compact.

    THE VIEWERS HAVE SPOKEN

    REPLIES:

TmiguelT: Thanks for your reply and your vote.

kj3400: It is not now, but it will be, so it should be free-flowing. Glad you like Southeast Riverton.

    jacqulina: Thank you.

Well, the viewers have spoken, and the choice was a turbine. However, I thought a turbine would take up too much space, so I chose a stack instead, which is functionally equivalent:

    2-92.jpg

You may have noticed the 8-lane freeway. In the near future, it will be an important connection to a district of high-density development.

Lastly, here is a region view with the interchange highlighted:
