Alright, all this talk of banning guns is rediculous. Just declare shoot-outs legal and the gun crime rate will drop dramatically!. hehe

And people think I'm paranoid because I wouldn't go to Mexico.

I really think you would be pleased, we as a nation seem to be fascinated by British accents and I'd bet you would get a friendly reception. C'mon over, ST will watch over you 9.gif.

A fun crime rate fact from a couple of years ago: Eugene, Oregon had a overall crime rate 33% higher than NYC.

Portland, OR was 28% higher. So much for the 'harmless hippie'  stereotype. At the time, it was attributed to Giuliani. It was a shock to people in Oregon, too.

Let no one yield, we're on the field where deeds eclipse the sun; where the brave are told on a thread of gold, the tapestry is spun. As they speak of dreams, their armor gleams, this calm before the storm... Where all can see their destiny, the bishop takes the pawn.

What did Giuliani do? Lowered the crime rate?

Statistically, there are more suicides in the US every year than homicides, yes.

Still, you're not more likely to commit suicide than get murdered if you aren't yourself suicidal. Besides, suicide is a whole seperate issue. Voluntarily deciding to end your own life, while it's tragic and cowardly, is something you have every right to do if you so choose. It's involuntarily ending someone else's life that's the bad thing. Causing the death of someone who doesn't want to die.

The crime rate did go down drastically and the city really improved under Giuliani, yes, though a lot of people weren't/aren't too fond of him. Many considered him oppressive. He was also prone to a lot of hotheadedness, angry outbursts, semi-petty revenges, and crazy antics- basically, he was a true New Yorker. 3.gif

I think many of us Europeans would love to go (especially now, with the currency holiday rates), but that many of us have picture of a US not wanting visits (government wise--but that's of course hard to distinguish on the outside). Sad, as everyone (especially us at ST3.gif) would find something of interest in the US.
