After being a long time gamer/ lurker on MMPOG's such as Ultima Online and WOW and etc over the years.. my son talked me into a trial acct on EVE. 

I will say its a bit different (and of course more of the same under different names.. ie Corporations=guilds, etc) but the interface is a real challenge.. it takes real perseverance to get down to real gaming (I'm not there yet and my son.. though lots more experienced than I, admits he's still learning too.) 

There are "learning web sites" and "guide sites" etc, but it's a tough game to get learn. Its rated for 12+ but one of the things that I like is that there are very few "kids" on it.. at least that I've run into.

eve-online.com offers a 14 day trial for free.. then it goes on a "per month" pay to play system.

There seem to be about 30000 players for now. One way in which it is different is that it is all based on a single "server farm" instead of servers around the world.. we'll have to see how that plays out as population grows. It is located in England I think, and the connection is not superior, but it is very good.

My brother plays this. I made a character on his his account but never took it any further because... well, I hate MMORPG's and i'm not a fan of Sci Fi. A good game though, I will admit... much more fun to watch than WoW with brilliant graphics as well, almost on par with Company of Heroes.

I've been playing the game for 4 months now, and I must say that I love it. Then again, I'm a real Sci-Fi fan.
