National City- With the most recent loses, the Gulls have been slowly heading down the wrong road. With a loss to CSKA Ilitj 4-1 the Gulls are being threatened to be taken out of the playoffs! The losing streak began in Earlton when our Gulls lost 3-2. The Gulls lost again to the New London Flames 5-2 in a game where D. Alfredsson got a game misconduct. The Gulls where 10th in the conference when they had back to back wins(I think). Their highest position was 7ths but recent standings have shown that they are in 8th.  GM Chris Constantine said last night following the loss, " We still have  more games and we really want to win! Our team is trying to find it's grove again." GM Constantine is credited with aquiring Alfredsson.  All we can do is hope that the National City Gulls  continue their quest to stay in the playoffs!

Port Matthew has been rolling in success recently. The Defenders STHL team is riding their second winning streak of the season, most recently taking the Alamosa Kings in a shootout, 5-4. When asked what the strength of the Defenders was, coach Paul Maurice commented on the strength of teamwork and playing for Port Matthew rather than individual glory. The lack of a standout star has also allowed Port Matthew to keep the contracts below some other teams. A steady roster and players smart enough to avoid injuries has also given the club great continuity this season.

Another strength of the team has become Turco's goalkeeping. After a rough start, dropping 6 of their first 7 games (mostly in overtime), Turco has really stepped up in the net to become a reliable backdrop for when the offense stalls out. He is tied for 5th in goals against average with Ward from the Magnus Monarchs with a GAA of 2.22.

This has all added up to a difficult team to get around. With no star players to key in on, defenses have a difficult time scheming to stop the Defender offense (a rather ironic notion, given the name of the team). Solid goalkeeping and taking more shots than the opposition create more opportunities for wins (or at least overtime losses). All in all, it is turning out to be a strong first year for the Port Matthew Defenders as they chase the Gretzky Cup.

I almost fainted this morning finding out what Marshall pulled off.  Quoting coach Han Russell:

Our greatest wins in the minor leagues were 5-0 and 6-0 shutouts, but never before have we ever gotten a shutout with 9 goals, much less in the major league.  I am really impressed!  Osgood performed very well in this game as did our hat-trick scorers Kovalchuk and Renberg.  I doubt another one of our games will be like this, but with our strength and determination, it's all posible.quote>
