Even though I known here mostly for The Sims which I play w/ my children, sometimes after a hard day at work I just want to let some bad guys have it!   9.gif  I know there are some good first person shooters out there.  I want a good fun stressful rollercoaster ride full of cool graphics, a story of sorts, easily responsive or intuitive controls while the game itself is potentially challenging.  My children (and wife) will be in bed!  And I'm definitely okay w/ mixing genres since I'm basically asking about games that get rid of bad guys in a thrilling engaging way, whatever they're labeled.

What are your thoughts about Call of Duty IV,  World of Conflict, Crysis, Gears of War, Bioshock, Witcher, Age of Empires II, or others?  Which should be my next?

World in Conflict is a great game to let off some steam but it is not a first person shooter. However if like to cause complete mayhem this game is for you.

I say COD 4 hands down.

It's an impressively intense action packed game. The SP mode is incredible. It's full of amazing moments, such you would only find in an action movie. The only disadvantage of the SP mode is the length, but the quality definitely makes it worth while. MP mode is also extremely impressive. You gain points while playing and advance to higher levels, unlocking weapons, attachments and perks on the way. I currently only play COD 4...not only because that I'm a fan boy, but because it is that awesome! 4.gif

I vote for Call of Duty 4 since it doesn't require much in the way of thought. It is real easy to get into. Bioshock has an excellent story but it isn't what I would call a mindless shooter. Gears of War is slick and a good choice. I would only recommend Crysis if you have a state of the art rig. If you want a real mindless shooter without the steep system requirement, try Soldier of Fortune: Platium or Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix.

Though it is not a first person shooter, World In Conflict is indeed a very nice game.

A couple of others which have not been thrown out there.

The Half-Life franchise is always a winner. I personally think Half Life 2 is heads and shoulders above the rest in plot.

Bioshock is a very, very, very disturbed little game. But...wow, is the plot fantastic. And the graphics are knock-you-socks off good, though at high they will tax almost any machine.

There is one older, less known "FPS" game I am a huge fan, and that is the Thief franchise. However, Thief really is not a First Person Shooter, it is more of a First Person Sneaker. Unlike other games, the object is not to go around shooting everything in sight...it is to stay hidden in the shadows and accomplish missions without being seen (in fact, going in head to head combat is a very bad idea). Though the graphics are dated in the first and somewhat in the second, the plots in both are some of the best out there. The graphics and plot in the third are most excellent.

Well...

I don't play a lot of FPS, and if I do it usually has some sort of tie-in with a different game I like. However, I can recommend Star Trek: Elite Force 1 & 2 if you like sci-fi. They're very fun and don't require a lot of system memory. Good online play as well.

Well, One thing I would Like to Recommend is the Original HALO for PC. If you Get this, you should also get HALO CE, which allows you to Mod the game, add new maps and drive new vehicles. Eg. Pelicans, Longswords and the Rest.

Also, COD4 is good, and Bioshock is also cool, if you like RPG elements.

Call of Duty 4 is another "hands down" for me. Half Life 2, Half Life 2: Episodes 1 and 2, Portal, and Team Fortress, otherwise known as the "Orange Box" is an excellent purchase as well.

All good games. Each one of them. Civilization IV is good, but it is turn-based, so it may not be your type of game. The Orange Box, even just to get Portal, is good. Halo 3, I'm sure you've heard, is good. Half Life is good. Mass Effect is good as well. Many, many, many games out there are good.
