In my commercial cities, the simulator keeps on picking the same type of building.  I have so many different type of buildings yet it does this.  How do I get more variation in the building choices, without plopping?

I would select the "build all styles at once" and then select every building style there is.

Also, if you're complaining about not growing the buildings you downloaded, some buildings don't have a growable version and others will only grow when you are building a certain style. Look in the readme and see if any tilesets are mentioned and select at least those in the building style selection.

If you have a lot of custom buildings you can check if they have several lot files of different sizes, like 2x4 4x3 etc. Simply remove all lot-files except one to have more control of your zoning, but be sure too keep all modelfiles. Try search STEX for "tilesetmod" https://www.simtropolis.com/stex/index.cfm?id=11582 It removes all Maxis building to the Chicago tileset, and by turning it of will force your custom buildings to start growing like seaweed. Another mod is the "block all maxis" mod https://www.simtropolis.com/stex/details.cfm?id=16393&v=1 that simply blocks all maxis buildings from growing.

Some BATs may be very bad configured, they can have too many sims working/living in a small building for example. This makes this bat "override" all other buildings and "cancer-grow". This may be the fault in Your city. You may need to remove or modd those buildings.

Please post a screenshot of an area that is not developing good and I am sure that You can have more specific answers of getting a nice-growing city.

All in all, time consuming is the word here. That tilesetmod is great, wish I had found that sooner.

Always remember that you are unique. Just like everyone else.
