The movies article in this week's McLeans magazine stated that a new prequel to Star Trek is in the works with a Canadian actor being cast as the lead.  (Well, Bill Shatner is a Canadian, you know).

JanYpe: Shatner got payed almost nothing in his high days, i wouldn't be surprised.

I'm keeping my eyes on this movie.... but not with a whole lot of interest.

I don't like prequels.

I lost my liking for prequels when I saw the new (old) Star Wars films.  I didn't want drama and politics in a movie thats title is "Star Wars", I wanted HUGE Space battles, or "Wars In the Stars".

Anyways, getting back on topic, I've never been a Star Trek Fan/Trekie.  I watch the show from time to time when there is nothing else on but its actually not that bad.  I did see Nemesis, and I liked it.  So, if this is going to be similar to Nemesis, then I may go see it.

My understanding is that Leonard Nimoy (the original Spock) was invited to participate but William Shatner wasn't and that Shatner was offended. I'm fan of the franchise when it started out but the latter versions of Star Trek just grew boring. At least they waited a few years (relatively) for it to come out. Like sequels to beloved computer games I'll wait to how the buzz and the critics play out.

I'll probably be out to see it, but who knows how good it will be. There are some interesting casting decisions, ie, Zachary Quinto (Sylar in Heroes) as Spock, the beautiful Zoe Saldana as Uhura, Karl Urban as McCoy, John (Harold) Cho as Sulu and Simon Pegg as Scotty (the last two let me know the light-hearted atmosphere of the originals will remain). Eric (HulK) Bana and the beautiful Winona Ryder being in the film also give me a little bit of hope.

Star Trek movies are very hit (Wrath of Kahn) and miss (The Undiscovered Country). I have high hopes this will be a hit - and having it directed by J.J. Abrams (Lost) helps, in my book.

Let us hope they avoid some colorful glowing FX clouds or giant humming cylinders and instead give us that Romulan surprise attack on Earth's Spacedock following by-the-numbers "Tora! Tora! Tora!".

"U.S.S. Ward to StarFleet Command: Have sighted and fired upon cloaked vessel operating inside our security zone."

"You woke me up on a Sunday morning for a vague report like that! We get false sightings like that all the time, and they are always just the usual planetary electromagnetic field effects. You know that young eager captain of the Ward is still new to the Chair and has an inexperienced and overly excitable crew fresh from the Academy, so let's not jump the gun here with all these unnecessary alerts. Confirmation...I want Confirmation!"

Okay, maybe it is best I am not writing this stuff.
