HM's Revenue and Customs Loses 25Mil Bank Records..Addresses..

Yesterday, Her Majesties Revenue and Customs Service "misplaced" two data disks that contain details on over 25 million people, thats about a third of the entire population of the UK. The disks contained names, address, date of birth, National Insurance number and, where relevant, bank details.

Apparently, the Service was transporting the disks to a different facility. They used an unregistered courier, and the disks themselves are apparently only password-protected, and not encrypted at all.

Alistair Darling, the UK Chancellor of the Exchequer, is conducting an investigation, with help from the Metropolitan Police. Gorden Brown, Prime Minister, has expressed deep regret at the situation.

The chief of Revenue and Customs has since resigned.

And the Government wants to put in a national ID-card system, which would require a massive database needing detailed information on everyperson in the UK? Better get their act together..

I still support the ID Card, this was not the result of a policy failure, but HM Revenue and Customs not following their own rules and a low-level official copying the data.

I hope he has been sacked already, a total disgrace and shambles. This really has nothing to do with the government as a whole but this department not following guidelines and codes of conduct. This was going to happen eventually, maybe now this will push them to deny access to this information to low-ranking employees and introduce stronger security measures. I also hope TNT, the courier, loses their delivery contract over this, total disgrace.

Oh the poor ailing labour government... what other misfortunes await them?

Why on earth were customs and excile merged with inland revenue? What a ridiculous idea. Customs should be part of the home office...

Isn't there a policy regarding tranportation of sensitive material? Well, at least you know who to claim your money from when your identity is lost.

I do not think there is, I believe it is more of a rule/guideline that was not followed for whatever reason. By policy I'm speaking about the laws and regulations passed by Parliament and/or suggested by Government for data collection and security, this was a case when common sense went out the window for some reason. As well as junior officials being given access to this information which I'm sure is now under review.
