Alright, I completed the Big City Tut a long time ago and ended up having one of my favorite cities. But one day I came back to the game to find out all my tutorials had reset them selves. I never hit that option that I know of. But now when I try to play the Big City Tut the game always freezes the instant the map loads. This even happened before I began to download any modds. All my other tutorials work fine. Please help.

Strange.  Using windows explorer, copy the city to another folder (e.g. My Documents\Simcity 4\Downloads) then copy the original city from Program Files\maxis\Simcity 4.

This should reset it as a tutorial in your game.  You can then try importing your modified city back into its slot.

I know it's been a while since this post was made, but could you explain a little more in depth what you mean? I don't have the modified city of it anymore, I believe the game just erased it. A few days ago the tutorials reset themselves again. This time it happened after the game froze but I'm not sure if that's how it happened the first time.

So basically I need to replace all my tutorials with the maps I previously had there, except I want to restart the Big City Tut all over again. It's confusing moving all these maps around when all the files have the same name, especially when you have My Documents and My Computer open.

Man, this is frustrating.... They all have the same name!!

See, the problem I ended up getting the 2 files confused, one has todays date and the other has a date from '03. I'm assuming the '03 date is the original, but that didn't seem to work.

I'm starting to think either my mods are conflicting with it or the files corrupted, I have a mod file in mind.

Ok please help, I've gone as far as removing the file and everything. I have put the same file dated '03 into my Program Files and My Documents, that didn't work. So then I put the same file dated today into each one of those, didn't work. I removed the landmarks as jobs mod because there's a landmark on Big City Tut, didn't work. Please help

Some times when the game crashes it will corrupt the city file, especially if it happens while saving the city.

I am not sure I follow what you are doing. There is a backup of the Timbuktu region in the Programs files regions folder. But if you copy it into the My Documents regions folder you will lose the work you have done in the my documents region.

I know, I've done that, that didn't work. Is there a way where I can download the Big City Tut? Both files seem to be corrupted. Read my edit to my post above.

Can you explain to me how do to that? I opened the CD's file but didn't see where to get it from.

Well I removed the Big City Tut from the Program File and my Documents and started up the game. The city wasn't there as I suspected, so I clicked restart Tutorials and the city came back. I'm guessing this is the same idea as taking the city from the CD file it's self. But the city still froze when I tried to play it.

Drag [copy] the region, or city from the CD to the documents [region] folder, then you will be overwriting the files in the documents [region] folder, so you will have to ok that. Remember whatever is in the Documents region folder will be deleted when the new folder is copied. If you have something you want in the region, then you must save somewhere else before overwriting.

I know how to do that part. But I can't find the regions or cities on the CD file... I need to know where they are on the CD...The only file I can actually open is the AutoRun folder, which contains nothing of that sort.

I am assuming you have the deluxe version, as I don't have the basic version to check.

Use the Windows Explorer, and expand the tree the CD drive the disc is in. The folders, and files appear as they do in the progarm files.

I know this may sound stupid but there's nothing I can open. I know how to look at the files with Windows Explorer and all but there's nothing I can open except AutoRun, which contains nothing I can open.

I went to MyComputer clicked on SC4DELUX2(E: ) and there was no files that I could get the maps or regions from that I know of. I'll list all the files under it if you want me to. This is so frustrating, and I know the answer is going to be simple...

In the Windows Explorer, open the righthand side, called folders. In the view menu click details, then on the right side click the + next the the drive. That will expand the tree, then you can see the folder "Regions", click on it, or the + to expand it. If you want the entire region drag it, if you only want the city, then expand the Timbuktu region for the city file.

You really don't have to dumb it down that much. I'm telling you there's nowhere to get it from on the CD. When you say CD you don't mean my C Drive right? That's where my game is installed, you're telling me to extract it from the CD you need to play the game with. I'm just making sure we're on the same base. Here, I'll list the files that are on the CD:

    AutoRun, 00000000.016, 00000000.256, 00000001, 00000002, autorun, DRVMGT.DLL, EP1, GraphicsRules.sgr, Intro, RunGame, SC4, SECDRV, SimCity_1, SimCity_2, SimCity_3, Sound, VideoCards.sgr

Either I'm looking in the wrong place, something's really messed up, or I'm confused or we're both confused. Sorry this is taking forever to fix, if I can't fix it soon I'll just reinstall.

The CD I refer to is the disc one, the install disc, I believe you are looking at the play disc 2.

The C: drive is the hard disk, the one the game is installed on, and has the My documents.

I don't mean to dumb down things too much, but I really don't know your level of skill. I mean no umbrage.

Wow, I knew the answer would be simple. It's been such a long time since I opened the case that I forgot there were 2 CDs. And don't worry, I know the basics of computers and how to find and install programs well enough to get around all the modding and such.

Alright, so let me try this again.

    No use.......

I put the city folder into each Timbukto folder at the same time, tried it, didn't work. I put the city into only one of the Timbuckto folders, trying each folder, didn't work. What am I doing wrong now!?

Put the city in the downloads folder and import it.

    Blindside:

You didn't need to do anything to the "Program Files\Maxis\Simcity 4\Regions" folder, that is there for backup purposes only.

I have lost track of what you are trying to do. What I have been suggesting will only roll back the region, or city back to the default. It will not repair the city you were developing.

Ok, I understand that. But I tested only putting the Big City file from the CD onto the MyDocuments/SimCity4/Regions/Timbuktu folder but the game still shut it's self down when I tried to play the Big City Tut in the game. All I want to do is roll back to the default, so I can replay the tutorial on it and have a city going again.

Sorry this has gotten way more complicated then it should.

Somehow I missed, or forgot that the game was still crashing. If that was the city that originally caused the crash, then I think the problem is in the custom content.

It might have been a mod that changed a game file, in that case, removing the plugins won't solve the crashes. Have you used any god mode tree mods?

You may be to the point you need to do a clean install of the game. You don't need to delete your my documents\simcity 4 folder, that way you won't lose any more cities.

When you uninstall you need to delete all leftover folders in the program files\Maxis folder. If you have files in that plugins folder you might want to save those somewhere, but don't move them back until you get the game running right.

I did just install a tree mod. I'll try this out, thanks.

And along with that mod I have the Landmarks With Jobs mod, I know the Big City tut has a landmark in it, I forget the land marks name, so I removed that file from the mod its self.

Alright, I removed the Pulgins folder and reinstalled the city and the city worked fine, now i just gotta figure out which mod is conflicting. Or maybe the city will work if I put the Plugins back, lets see.

Dosen't work with the plugins installed, any idea which one it could be?

Well the thing is I had the crashing issue before I had the trees installed, I'll take them out anyways to see if that's the cause.

Took the trees out, that wasn't the prob. I didn't think they were, I'll start sorting through my mods.

I really don't understand the logic, if you had a crashing problem, why in the world were you installing more mods?

If you want to know what custom content is causing the problem, the stickie at the top of the Bugs & Technical Issues forum, "How To: Identify Faulty Plugins", will help with that.

Well the crashing happened way before I even had mods installed. But now it seems to be the reason for it. And it only happened on that city.

I got it working again, not quite sure which file it was. I took them all out and put them back in in groups, and the city played fine.

Well thank you so much for your help Tungston, I know it was frustrating. Thank you.

You are welcome, it's no problem.  I would really get bored if I didn't have this to keep me busy. 19.gif

I am glad you have a game to play now.  I really hate it when things don't work the way the are intended to.
