for example, some of the newest tallest skyscrapers [petronas, taipei, the buildings in shanghai, the al arab burj, hong kong buildings, etc] look pretty good in my opinion, but freedom tower, eh. if i look close enough at it, it looks like they took the old WTC tower and twisted it, i'll get used to it once it gets built though, [most people didn't like the twin towers when they were built in the 70's] i really don't like the burj dubai either though, i think it's really obnoxious building a super tower when you don't need it.

@duke: yes, i know that skyscrapers aren't built from stone, i meant skyscrapers that look like they're built from stone. my mistake of bad choice of words.

I find the Chicago spire hella ugly... theres just something I don't like about it. FT on the other hand, its not so bad... as hotdog said, it does look like a more futuristic twisted version of the WTC, but its still not as nice looking as some of these other skyscrapers being built around the world...

Land prices in New York are astronomical... I can't imagine many more of these Ultra-Contemporary skyscrapers going up anytime soon...

Agreed, El Burro. Half of the Manhattan Skyline is Historical. They'll never tear it down. The Land left costs millions. New York's only chance to become the world leader in these kinds of buildings is if the city starts to develop other Bouroghs like Brooklyn and Queens much more. I'd really like to see the World's Largest Building to come back to New York.

Willing to bet on that? 5.gif
There are already several +1,000 foot (over 300m) skyscrapers that will knock down existing high-rises such as the Penn site and even the MSG (Madison Square Garden). And here's a high-rise called The Drake that will be replaced by a 70-story tower:

(The building on the right is not the proposed building)

Actually... there is one other way. In the movie Bicentennial Man with Robin Williams, they increased the height of existing buildings. Since the movie was made before 9/11, the World Trade Center was still standing and had an extra 2,000 feet added to it in an untold year (I'm guessing 2030). And, in fact, they are already doing that. In Chicago, they are adding 25 stories to the Blue Cross building. Here's the before and after:

So, what I'm trying to say is that the skyline can always expand upward. Who knows, maybe 50 years from now, the Freedom Tower could go even higher. By then, though, Dubai will have a tower so tall that it will make the Earth look like a lollipop. 17.gif

i know exactly what you mean in 20 years each city will look identical to each other because everybody wanted glas buildings and in 80 years time they will all be demolished for the same reason we're demolishing the 60s buildings they are ugly and out of fashion just becasue overly sleek is in doesn't mean you have to follow it

i can imagine it now

"daddy why did they build that glass tower?"

"well people thought it was a new age like when grandad had his purple shirt and orange tie"

"that was funny"

also i hardly think that a swirly tower is structurally sound

Crazyyaya- yes half of the skyline in NYC is historical, and no, they cant tear anything down, but, that doesent stop them from building over other smaller buildings. Like what the Hearst Building did. The built there new headquarters above their old historical headquarters. And what Micah showed a couple posts ago, youll find that in the early pages of the thread, there are pictures, and it shows the transformation of the skyline by building over MSG(madison square garn, and old rail lines.

from here on are some, not a lot of pictures, of proposed pictures, of what Micah showed earlier,

Micah-They can't tear down MSG! thats insane!

to everyone. Who really cares if new york doesnt have the tallest building? Tapei had it for a while, and i didnt even know until about 2 years ago. Despite what everyone thinks, having the worlds tallest building doesnt make a city the best city in the world. Unless it suddenly becomes an absolute hellhole, I will always think of new york as the second greatest city in the world (Boston #1 3.gif), even if it doesnt have 5000 foot glass towers.

What i`d like to see in New York is almost like a Multiple CBD sort of thing going on... over time Manhattan WILL develop more contemp Skyscrapers, the more exspensive the land means they`ll obviously want to make the most of the Office Space, but untill then, they may start to build smaller, more modest Skyscrapers in places like Brooklyn, Queens and Staten...

As Micah said, they may even build glass and metal Structures ontop of the existing brick ones... the Historic Stone buildings on Manhattan would provide a good support for such structures as they tend to be pretty robust.

has anyone seen the turning torso building in Malmo, Sweden? I was there last week and i thought it was beautiful just wanted to say.

And i think the Freedom Tower is designed by Norwegian architects http://www.snoarc.no/ who also designed the new Oslo operahouse.

I'm looking forward to see the freedom tower when it's done:-)

I think there was a contraversy between an American designer and a Euorpean designer, but the European one, im not sure which country though.

I've never been impressed with the new "freedom tower" design.

Good post Manman, i know exactly how you feel.

I'd also like to add a question. Who exactly is building these towers? I doubt its the united states government. I just have a problem when people say "we" when its not "us" at all, but rather some corporation that probably doesn't represent the will of the American people as well as "we" would all think.

^ I would like it if it spun around. they could have puke collectors at the base, and they could sell the puke to chinese toy manufacturers and make lots of money, while preventing more lead toys from getting over here 3.gif

dan and manman-you guys should be glad new yorks getting a 1776 footer, and stop complaining that it looks like an overgrown syringe (alright, thats me), or that its not the tallest. You know what my cities gonna get? we are getting a measly 1200 footer 3.gif , so you should be more grateful.

^ i merely said i was not happy with the design. I am entitled to my opinion. I won't respond any further to that comment.

I dunno, I like the Freedom tower itself, but not any of the other ones, especially that one that looks like four seperate buildings woht slanted roofs.

And I agree, the should start building more stone skyscrapers, instead of all these all-glass buildings

As i've said before, the height is truthfully irrelevant to its real purpose in the Manhattan skyline.

Nevertheless, this tower still remains as THE MOST controversial works of Architecture than any other in the entire world.

Saying that the base of the tower looks scary is a pitifully weak excuse for rebuilding the Twin towers by the people who want the original towers rebuilt.

However, in my opinion, I think that IF the money was there, we should build this:

    @manman99:  Pardon?!

(unless your talking about what he's doing on skyscrapercity, because a few people here on Simtropolis have known that for several months now...)

Something very tall needs to be build in twos.... esp. if replacing the Trade Centers (which I think they should just rebuild)

Actually, I recently visited a site that had a poll asking people whether they would like the Freedom Tower...or the Freedom Twin Towers.

These interesting results from that site may suprise you:

    93% Freedom Twin Towers
    7% Freedom Tower

I was talking to a friend a few weeks ago who was in NYC, she said it looked as if nothing was started at ground zero....well if they say it will be done by 2010 the better get a move on I guess.

noahdiehl- its suppose to be completed in 2011, but the main building, not the spire, will be completed in 2009, and they just started, but in fact, i think they are ahead of schedule, its a slow process.

noahdiehl-i think right now they are working on the base and some of the essentials like water sewage electricity, etc. Once you get building up, it goes alot faster. There was a building in my town that built 3 floors(of the building skeleton, or whatever it is called) in a day. at that rate, the freedom tower would be up to 1776 in a little less than 34 days.

The results of that poll aren't surprising. After all, a lot of people (myself included) think it would be more fitting if the new complex included twin towers of some sort.

But you take what you can get...
