How come commute time is so long?

Take a look at the pic. The building at #1 has a long commute time when doing a query for the building, while the house across the street has a short commute time. The bus station (marked as #2) is just outside the building, and the city is only a few tiles away, with a nice one way road leading towards it with medium traffic.

I've downloaded the latest Network Addon Mod (June 2007) and when I installed it i marked "Custom transit" (or something like that) because I had read that it was the best for getting good transit times. But still the problem remains. 42.gif

Are you sure you chose "Radical Custom Special" as the traffic commute times? That is the best option for shorter commute times. You might have to run the game for a few years (in Sim time!3.gif) before the NAM can really take place. Make sure you have all the right options you want in the NAM, and then let the game sit for a while, it should work after that.

I have this same problem sort of. I have the newest NAM installed with the perfectpathfinding plugin. This is listed as a long commute. This building subsequently abandoned. 15.gif

Well, there is a known problem in the game with getting the Sims to work.  They are class A stupid and will go a long way when there is a job across the street.

I use the Perfect Path Finding option of the NAM, and I think this less radical approach pays dividends.  However, all of this is a matter of trial and error.

Just uninstall the NAM, reinstall it and choose different options until you get what you want.

Okey, I re-installed the NAM and now the plug-ins. I think I made a mistake when choosing my installation-mode, I used the recommended one when I should have used the custom installation. 4.gif

Yes indeed; the last option in the "Pathfinding" menu is the best, as Mikeaut1 first said. Good thing to hear you are getting things back on track! Good luck with your cities!

Gosh, people (sims) should really start to calm the heck down and see that just a block down the road isn't going to take an hour's worth of drive! Many of our parents have to travel dozens of miles to work anyway! I remember, when my dad had his job transferred to America, he had to travel over 50 miles to San Francisco, which should be more than a SC4 large city parcel away.

Yes indeed; perhaps this problem will get fixed in later versions of SC. For now; we just have to deal with those poor sims.

I think that if they don't have enough jobs of the right type, a sim will drive all over town looking for work.  So "long commute time" might be a code for "unemployment."  I've had big buildings like that abandon too- if you can replace it with smaller buildings it might work better (by demolishing and rezoning part of it, say).

If you figure it out, please post your solution.
