A picture is worth a thousand words. (Post one !! 4.gif) To make sure the el-rail works well, it is found that you need to have roads bordering on the long side (the 3 tile long side) but NOT NOT NOT have a road touching either of the short sides.  I can't remember exactly what happens but its ends up being crazy.

Also to maximize usage make sure it is connecting Residential zones to the commercial and industrial sectors of your city.  If you've developed a neighboring city make sure the line extends all the way to the next town.

    Good Luck!

My advice to you is be patient.  When you fill in that huge empty space in the center there, traffic on the roads will increase and probably force people to use the el train.

If you want to get EL traffic try this:

First create a connection between residential and industrial. Next place a bus stop near your stations but at least 4 tiles away. Make sure you have plenty of bus routes to compliment the El line. If you place a bus stop too close to a station the Sims will take the bus for their entire commute instead.

    Good luck!
