Why JPG and not GIF?

Why do people use jpeg instead of a possibly non-lossy format such as gif?  Windows Bitmaps are very bloated, and I've yet to get a portable network graphic to even load... I often question why they did not offer Tiff or TGA as options.

Anyhow, such is my question.

PS: Is there a guide to the texture's dimentions required for different sized regions?  The default config.bmp is 16x16, and I found I could make a region that was 4x4, so do any other numbers work?  And does the terrain texture have to be a multiple of 256 plus one or is it possible to have a 14x14 or use a 1025 texture on a 12x12?

These are the guide lines:

grayscale to config.bmp ratio :

64:1 plus 1

config.bmp file:

Large city = 4x4 pixels blue

Medium city = 2x2 pixels green

Small city = 1x1 pixels red

You can make the region any size your computer can render. The regions don't have to be square, or even-sided.

To add further info

jpegs are used for one reason size of file as they are mcuh more compact than just about any other file type.

Before SC4TF it was necesscary to render in simcity which used bmp,  gif, jpg among a few others for importing.

To deal with png files it would be best to use SCTF and import using SCTF.

Regions can be any size you wish or even have holes in them.

SCTF uses a SC4M files which while they are larger are alot simpler to use.

Cool, and you don't have to render cities in the whole region, either! Just use RGB 0,0,0 and it skips that square. Cooool.
