being disappointed by what looks like to be the next installment of the simcity I started wondering what the possibilities were for an open source version of simcity developing. Knowing there is a vibrant simcity community that tweak everything there is to tweak when it comes to SC4 I reasoned it will be only a matter of time before such an initiative will be taken. Then to my surprise, I found that there already is an open source city building game: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lincity

Does anybody know about this game and/or any other open source city building initiatives?

Well the graphics for sure leave much to be desired. 2.5D AND not much for details. Eh. But that can only get better, and it's inspiring to see there is such an initiative at least.

How can you be disappointed with something that hasn't been released?.

But do we really need another version of SimCity from EA or anyone else?.The answer is no seeing what this community is doing to this version of SimCity.

Do you really think EA will ever be able to produce the SimCity you want?.The answer again is no seeing how they like other companies are more focused on the bottom line then the product.

So as I said previous you gotta give this so called version of SimCity a chance before we hang anyone.

I actually tried this game out a long time ago. I think it has some cool things about it: setting speed limits and such. But it's a throwback to SC2000, and not very pleasing to the eye. Open source doesn't mean bad quality, just this one. :-]

Well, with open source, and a small group of dedicated SC4 programmer/players, it might go somewhere.

I don't think a 540° Camera would be much help, and modeling would have to be well thought out.

The actual simulator should get more testing than this one has ever had, and some accommodation for SC4 Custom Content would be nice.

Overall, I don't think you could find a team for this.
