There's a difference between GLR and normal rail?  Aside from no freight trains on GLR, is there any difference (or are there)?  I'm asking because I keep finding GLR to Rail transition mods on the STEX.

GLR is an extention of elevated rail. but some people actually made glr to rail transitions. im not sure on that though...

the GLR to rail transition doesn't work for passenger trains or trams/el-rail trains (especially in UDI). its like trying to run a street car of normal tracks in RL...street cars, trams, ect are powered by electricity so they need special tracks or special lines overhead. heavy rail is much taller than light rail and thus would crash into the overhead trusses. GLR is basically el-rail that was just laid on the ground.

They are an additional mod to go with the NAM

The NAM is available on the STEX, I am not sure about the GLR essentials.  There are lots of additions to the GLR on the STEX.

you plop the starter piece and use elevated rail to drag the rest. You can make sharp turns with it which is nice. I did an experiment with GLR though and all the people who used it just worked at the station on the other side. So I don't know which one is more efficient, but I've never had problems with regular rail.

its all how you set up the system...in my suburbs, i have a glr/bus combo and i get high usage out of it heading into my downtown and industrial areas. i used to use alot of rail, but glr is far more functional because of its compatibility with el rail and subway. in my experience both work about the same, its a matter of preference. i love mass transit (especially light rail) so i tend to use glr/el/subway the most.
