In the south of London our water is contaminated and we have to boil it to use it in any food or drink.

It seems horrible! 350,000 people in Gloucestershire will be left without running water by Monday evening! Talk about Water, water everywhere and not a drop to drink.

It's terrible to see parts of the country flooded. The question is why were houses built on floodplains and the government are still going to build on floodplains. It's mad, the government is messed up.

1000's of houses have recently been built on what was flood plain right next the the River Ouse, and suddenly on the Environment Agency website it was not listed as flood plain. How strange, hmm

Another update. The situation is getting worse; with flooding continuuing East along the River Thames and West into Wales.

The rain literally shown no sign of stopping until the September Equinox or there abouts.

We finally have a reason for the abnormal weather. The Gulf Stream, the thing that keeps Britain pretty much alive, has actually moved. It isn't hitting the Isles anymore. Which is the reason for the exceedingly large depression over the UK.

In some parts of Europe, the drought it so bad that a number of people have died from lack of water.

The estimated cost will be about $10 billion, or

Great, the Gulf Stream jumps causing floods in the Western EU and Droughts and Fires in the East

While my heart goes out to those affected

Governments need to take a look at Mitigation if the jump becomes long term

We shall see what the EU decides (or lack of) 3.gif

Lucky I live on the Thames Estuary and on top of a hill 4.gif I feel pretty safe - touch wood

this is porbably worse than any terrorist attack as it has affected so many people and it has left the UK quite weak now

I have to agree, the Gulf Stream has been taken for granted by the UK for a very very long time. It has to studied further. One wet summer is ok to deal with but one after another and the economy suffers. Northern Ireland has not been affected that much, we're a small place and very hilly so water runs into the rivers and quickly to the sea and loughs (lakes)

Remember if stays south in winter then we will have more to worry about as it will drag the cold air down over the UK and Ireland and we do not deal well with cold weather and snow. Bang goes the UK mild winters

I was surprised when I finally got it through my head that the UK is at a higher latitude than Maine.  Generally, I expect places at a higher latitude than Maine to have a climate like Canada. (Clearly, I'm not a meteorologist.)   But the UK's climate is not like Canada's so, yes, the Gulf Stream is very important.

SkiGeek: To put things even more in perspective, major cities like Birmingham are very nearly on the same latitude with Moscow. Birmingham has an average Winter temperature of 4C°C (40°F), whereas Moscow has the average temperature of -12°C (10°F).

The Gulf current is the only thing that keeps the UK at a temperate climate. If it goes, like it has done at the moment, severe weather like the one we are experiencing now is to be expected on a very regular basis, and many of our crops, especially Market Farming products will die out.

Already this summer thousands and thousands of acres of crops have failed due to the rain. We are having a low on wheat, potatoes, and other such vital foodstuffs.

The estimated cost will be about $10 billion, or £5 billion. The terrible thing is, this weather may become a common feature for us in the years to come.

Woah. If that is the cause, then it's sort of like a real Day After Tomorrow. So the Gulf Stream has actually moved? Permanently? I can imagine that if this permanent, millions would have to move inland, costing billions. And parts of Scotland could become unbearably cold, and they would have to move south. And agriculture would be hard hit, and manufactring  oil in the north sea would be come painfully costly. and shetlands may have to be evacuated.

Whereas here in Maryland, the governor wants to declare the corn crop a disaster due to the drought.  In some areas, we have had no significant rainfall since May.  Meanwhile, Texas and the UK are drowning.

SkiGeek: Last year, the hottest summer on record (this is the wettest summer for 250 years), it let to a hosepipe and watering ban for all of South England. We also had huge crop failures due to the drought. That's two years running in which the UK has had massive summer crop failures, with extreamly bizzare weather. If we get more of this, or if this is to be a common occurance (it may be) then the UK is in for a lot of trouble.

Simfan34: It also reminded me of that film. Hopefully the current will move back, though, since we arn't even sure why it moved in the first place (though you can guess), it might not move at all. That is a very scary and potentially catastrophic situation.

Alakazam: Agreed 100%.

Also, at least three people have now died due to the floods. A body was found in a field, and a farther and son were found dead due to carbon monoxide fuems from a petrol water pump they were using.

It's actually been one of the best days we've had here at the moment. Blue skies and sunshine. Though for some reason my area has had very little rainfall, so thats to be expected. Usually the rain comes from the West, over my mountains, and, because we are in the rainshadow, falls on us. This time the rain is from the East. Or something. That was what I was told anyway.

Pity about that father and son, as well, as the other person. Glad to see that it's stopped. For now.

i hate to butt in but this is La Nina year so the weather is not unusual what is unusual is that its 200 miles further south. the high pressure system over Europe is a lot weaker so the depressions aren't deflected nearly as much. the weather in yorkshire is what orkney would be getting about now plus if the gulf stream had diverted then we would be frozen as its main effect is heating up britain

Moscow is miles inland hundreds of miles we however are surrounded by the sea the fact that there even is water around us regulate the temperature range so we get cool winters and mild summers

Yay, finally someone with the same view!! I have been saying for ages that we were long overdue for El Nino. Yes global warming is a bad thing and plays its part but El nino is what is going on at the minute.

I take that dare,,,,,

Global Warming that moves a wind channel is false...

The reason for the flooding in the UK is due to a very very poor El Nino in the Pacific so the Atlantic must compensate,,,,,

The Atlantic shifts its wind a bit and brings the rain from La Nina to Europe...

Anyway if this fancy thing called Global Warming is real then its Uk's own damn fault...

You guys were the reason the Industrail Revolution happened....

u pumped billions and billions of tons of sulfer and smog and methane gas in the air from the mills and slums of the English Victorian Era...

i wish to point out that the purity of pollution is also a problem back in the industrial revolution when coal was burned carbon dioxide (the obvious, nitrous oxide, soot (which blocked light and heat) and sulphur dioxide the antidote to carbon dioxide the downside being that it is highly acidic when the industrial revolution happened the global temperature lowered and when pollution laws came in then the pollution was cleaned of the sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxide so the remainder was left to heat the globe up
