Musical Insturments

In your opinon what is the hardest musical insturment to master.

IMHO i think the piano is the most difficult because of the amount of work each hand does, in rythm, correct loudness, pedaling, and the amount of coordination needed with every finger.

What do you think?     Also, what's your favorite insturment. If you want, name a song in which that insturment is used exceptionally well.

If there is more than one (in my case 3) go ahead and share those too!

 1. Piano - Chopin - Ballade in G minor.

 2. Violin - Beethoven 5th Symphony... or "flight of the bumblebee"

 3. Trumpet - The Cat Empire - How to Explain

I play violin, and it's kinda in the middle, compared to other instruments. Your hands need to be coordinated, and there's little to no margin of error compared to a piano. There's no A or Bb, it's A, a little above, then a little more, then a little more, then Bb. Your bow hand also needs to be really coordinated to produce a good sound.

Piano, although it requires more multithinking, I don't think is much harder to produce a good sound on. You just press a key and all the levers and stuff hit the string for you.

I played the tuba for about 7 years, and I'm pretty sure it would have to be among the easiest. It has three valves (four on some, but the 4th is the same as 1 and 3 together....just to make it even easier) so there is very little hand coordination. Even though other instruments like trumpet and baritone have three valves also, the tuba mouthpiece is so big that anyone can get their mouth in it and produce sound.

The hardest thing with it is that it takes a huge amount of air, especially when playing extremely low notes or playing fortissimo. Playing very low notes fortissimo? Maybe if you're superman...

It also makes it harder to play other instruments that take more hand coordination. I rocked Guitar Hero on medium difficulty right off the bat because you only use four buttons. On hard mode, when they introduce the fifth button...it's insanely hard for me. I tracked down why this is, and it's most likely because I played the tuba for so many years, and I never had to move my three fingers. I can't even imagine what it's like the play a real guitar.

I play piano a little (around Con. of Toronto Grade 8), and I am a vocalist.

I don't play any wind instruments, but i believe the hardest is the French Horn.  The sound comes out later, quite a bit later than when you blow.  This means you have to be ahead of the orchestra all the time.  Depending on the tempo, there must be some pieces that are absolutely devilish to play.

I would seriously like to learn the bagpipes one day...

Ock eye tha nu!

You just gotta love the clothes as well.... and just what do you wear under your kilt?

All the celtic band instruments are very cool also, along with the type of music they make.

I am going to have a Celtic band for my 40th .... I was not allowed one for my 30th ..... I reckon 10 years is long enough to wait.

But we will have to see, that is next year.... damn now you know how old I am.

Does french horn really have to play ahead of the orchestra that much? I never thought it was that hard to play french horns.

I play trombone, and after 5 years of playing it I find it pretty easy to play but it really does take a while to get down all the slide positions precise. If you can develop a good range early, then you'll be able to get a lot of the high notes and pedal tones easily. Other than that, it's just a matter of remembering the notes and get used to moving the slide very, very fast. I always have a blast playing it! Our section does a lot of crazy stuff sometimes. Not too crazy though.
