The shuttle that is carrying 29 people to the spacedock for an unknown destination lifts off:

And the external tank detaches:

And docks with the spacedock:

Then a press release is sent out - the 29 astronauts are going to the planet Olympis Patius - a Mars-like planet 38 million kilometers away. The great capsule then detaches from the station and fires it's boosters:

It accelerates to 0.05 of light speed and reaches the planet, and enters the atmosphere:

They then look around and see a suitable landing site, and move towards it:

And they narrowly miss a canyon embankment:

And they land and pose for a picture:

They congratulate each other, and unpack all materials and form a small camp a few hundred feet from the capsule:

The Emperor Patricius Maximus departed his homeworld for the Olympis Patius Colony, to resupply and einforce them. Little did he know that it would be his last look at his planet.

Some hours later, an island observatory spotted a swarm of 8 asteroids and thousands of meteors on a direct course for the planet. Atomic missiles were fired at the object. It changed course, but mysteriously got back on a collision vector. In the last minutes before impact, the commanding General told Patricius Maximus of the asteroid, and to take him and the Olympis Patius crew to other planets. Then -- it hit:

Molten shrapnel blasted out from the site of impact, followed closely by the meteor storm, which liquified any remaining rock:

Patricius looked through his telescope in horror as he knew that all his cities -- all his projects -- were gone.

The Emperor decided it was time to leave Olympis Patius and persue other planets. Taking their belongings with them, the remaining Patians took off in their capsule, towards a star cluster close to them.

3 weeks in transit, they spotted a planet whose atmosphere could sustain life according to the spectrum. Upon approach, they discovered it was a desert planet, bathed in heat by an F-class star. Nevertheless, they needed to refuel and repair the capsule. They came towards a canyon to establish a campsite:

They landed, and set up a rudimentary solar array, some farms, and even some residences:

Even in this remote desert wasteland, the Patians made a home for themselves. And they grew quite confident that they would soon find a planet they could settle on, and rebuild the Patrician Empire and their cities...

The Patricians decided they would send out an expedition to know the surrounding terrain better. They went east of the settlement on a 10-day mission:

The odd absence of vegetation at the Patrician site was confirmed to be an oddity when the team stumbled on this valley populated by cactus species:

And they pressed on, now kilometers away from the outpost.....

Now 20 kilometers from the site, the team heard a strange noise that sounded like jet engines in the distance:

When binocular scans revealed nothing, they went back to the site.

When they told Patricius Maximus about it, he thought they were suffering from a mirage. Nevertheless, he ordered the immediate construction of fortifications in the forms of walls and patrols....

Patricius himself went out with a patrol in the direction of the jet sounds and set up a camp on a 450 foot ridge. What they found was overwhelming.

The source of the mysterious sounds was nothing less than an airport, connected to a city of at least a million inhabitants. Scanning to the east, they saw retaining walls and a trumpet interchange:

He decided to go to the trumpet area, especially since he saw several governmental facades on some buildings in the area. Approaching the capital of the mysterious country, he introduced themselves.

"We are refugees from a distant planet. We came here in peace and friendship. May we have an audience with your leader?"

The guards approved, and escorted them to a room with another leader in it. He introduced himself as President Aurius of the planet Darida.

Patricius told about the incidents he had in his travels, and learned that he had been under jet observation ever since he arrived.

Aurius seemed very curious about the Patricians, and agreed to give Patricius Maximus 1 million km² of land on the outskirts of the state.

Patricius then left with his team, and headed back to the camp. When he arrived, he gave the orders.

He said:

"We will carve out a new empire out of these deserts and we shall rise again!"

Then the men set to work to rebuild a new empire for themselves.

Super! Just plein super. Very nice story (love that kind of stuff.....lol) and beautiful gameplay with nice pictures. I love that Meteorite picture hitting earth......just great. No pictures for today's update. It'll be a filler for the storyline.

Patricius's first task was to build a massive irrigation project to make his vast desert land more fertile. He diverted rivers to make vast canal zones. Within 1 year of his arrival, 4000 km² of land was becoming green with grass and wildflowers.

In 10 year's time, a new generation of Patricians was being born at a fantastic rate. 12 years post-arrival, the population that was once 20 had reached hundreds of people.

Also, a small trickle of Daridans came to live with the Patricians. They thought that Patricius Maximus was the future of their area.

The population was swelling, bringing 800 Daridans in every year.

Towns sprung up, often containing tens of people, connected by canals and small highways.

By 14 years after the Patricians' arrival, the President Aurius's welcoming hospitality had turned to suspicion and jealously of the Patrician's excellent land.

 

NEXT UPDATE: Patricius hands the reins of power to the next generation of his land, and Aurius's suspicions create tensions....

UPDATE 22: NEW TENSIONS AND A NEW EMPEROR

First of all, I have a new banner for this CJ in my sig:

Notice the planet Darida, and the Mercury capsule in the corner. I think it suits the storyline better . Please post feedback on it.

14 years after the arrival, Patricius Maximus's reign was now one that lasted 59 years. He had selected a suitable heir to his throne, his friend and protegé, Patricius II.

Before the coronation ceremony, Patricius Maximus infrormed Patricius II that he will stay in the capital city for "governmental assistance". The ceremony took place overlooking the irrigation fields, which feeds the swelling population:

14 years, 2 months, and 23 days after the asteroid impact on the former planet, Patricius II took up the position of Emperor of the Patrician Empire.

2 days later, word reached Patricius that construction crews had arrived near the Patrician border with Darida. 50 minutes later, a jet recon flight reported that a wall was being constructed.

Also, over in the Daridan capital, Aurius made a radio transmission to Patricius II. He announced, 

"Patricius -- we will not have our population depleted by the lure of your fertile lands. Therefore, we are constructing this wall in self-defense. Any attempts to interfere with it's construction will constitute a declaration of war."

Both Patricius Maximus and Patricius II chartered a flight to the Daridan capital, in an attempt to cut a deal with Aurius:
