Hi everyone!

I was jus thinking do you think the world is gradually becoming a  more peacful place?

Despite the war on terror in Iraq which i belief is the only major war going on at the moment not much else is happening which is so good!

If you think a developed nation never starts a war on another develped nation

so you would not see the U.S starting a war in Western Europe or Australia starting a war on China vice versa.

What do you think?

Thank You!

I am sorry to say that this is a naive attitude.  The best definition of war is that war is the last resort of diplomacy.

War is hell.  You take someone's land away from him and make all his people do what you want.  There is no such thing as a bloodless war.  Wars are not won in the air or at sea.  They are won by soldiers taking territory inside the enemy nation, preferably the whole country.  This means that many civilians will be killed in unpleasant ways.

The idiots who pursue war call this "collateral damage" but people are just as dead as if you called it "killed in the cross fire".

Civilized nations do, in fact, war on each other.  What do you think England and its allies were doing with the Kaiser's empire in the World War (Act I).  What do you think the Germans were doing to the Poles, the French, and so on in Act II.  What do you think the North Koreans were doing in the Epilogue when they attacked South Korea?

Ever heard of Viet Nam?  If the British hadn't handed French Indochina back to the French after the asian chapters of Act II, Ho Chi Minh would have done his thing in peace.  He had it all under control and organized.  But it wasn't in the interest of the Allies to allow a communist nation to control the waters in that area, so ...  Unfortunately someone forgot to tell the people of Viet Nam that they were being rescued from the evil communists, so they remained either neutral or part of the resistance.  But since this wasn't a war, the Geneva Convention didn't apply to with side.  Remember Mai Lai?

If people aren't feeling belligerant  about each other, what is going on these days where we still have peace keepers:  Cyprus, Kosovo, etc.  What about the war at the east end of the Mediterranean Sea?  It is a war of extinction as far as the Palestinians are concerned.  It is a civil war of brother against brother.  Both the Jews and Arabs are sons of the same father.  5000+ years is a long time to bear a grudge.

I could go on, but let's let others speak.

Jammy, the good old US of A invaded Viet Nam because "America" was going to "save" the world from communism.

Have you heard of Darfour?  How about Afghanistan?  Lebanon?

It wouldn't hurt you to read a few history books Jammy. 2.gif

Like N_O_Body said, Vietnam used to be part of French Indochina, a French colony in SE-Asia. When WWII rolled around, the Vichy-French government allowed the Japanese access to Vietnam. The (communist) Viet Minh resistance group fought for independence from the V-French, and fought against the Japanese occupation. Because of this they received financial backing from China and the US.

When the Japanese surrendered, Ho Chi Minh proclaimed the independence of Vietnam. This was a country in name only because of the arrival of (nationalist) Chinese troops. In exchange for the Chinese leaving, the French would give up certain interests in China and the Vietnamese would rejoin France, with the promise of becoming an independent country within a French commonwealth. Relations between the French and the Viet Minh went south quite quickly, which resulted in ten years of war and a French defeat. The country was temporarily split in two until unifying elections could be held. The communist Ho Chi Minh became prime minister in the North, while Ngo Dinh Diehm once again became PM in the South.

These new elections were never held. The South distrusted the North, and the US , who backed the South, wanted to 'contain' the spread of communism across Asia. Eventually the conflict escalated into a war between the North, who were supported by the (communist) Chinese, while the US supported the supposedly democratic south.

Before we finally hit peace, we must face another great war.

One which we may not survive...

World Peace doesn't just come freely; you have interests, cultures, people who dislike other people, weapons and the likes that could be stolen and used as a warmongering device.

The illusion of the world coming closer to peace is simply the veil being placed over your eyes to hide you from this fact.

Not that I don't believe in humans... It is just my 2 cents on the matter.

The world will not come to a complete peace until we wise up. Why hold a grudge, and hate the people your parents taught you to hate? What have they done to you personally? Nothing.

Each new life, each new generation is a new start. People should treat it that way. Stop being held back by the darkness of the past.

If "more peaceful" is defined by the amount of bloodshed and on the number of powerful nations going to war then yes, I think so. I don't think it's an "optimistic" viewpoint like others have pointed out. Back in the great days of colonies European nations constantly wared with one another. Asian nations wared with one another too.

Post-WWII has seen less waring over resources due to the spread of global capitalism. As a result war has now become a "final resort," whereas, in 17th century, 18th century, 19th century, etc... many rulers of Europe saw it as the only, if not best, resort.

If you also define "more peaceful" as having less domestic crime then crime rates have even fallen relatively well too.

I hate to be another one of the "blame the media" type of people, but one of the things I actually agreed with Michael Moore on in his Bowling for Columbine documentary is that the media's sensationalism has definitely led many Americans to be in a state of constant fear and panic. Americans actually live in pretty safe times and yet are probably more scared than ever before.

Im sure everything that is happening now probably happened in the past, and that it will happen in the future

world peace will probably only happen when humans die out
