I would like to know if anyone knows which forms of transportation are faster out of these? I would like a list of these from fastest to slowest or vise versa.

Monorail/high speed rail

Rail

Subway/ Elevated Rail

Ground rail light

Ferry

Subway/El Rail/GLR are basically the same thing.  You can connect them all

Subjectively, and by experience, ferries are very fast, but I doubt they outdo trains.  They seem to be fast hydroplanes, but need good auxiliary MT to make them work well.

Erm... Mclehr, I have SC4 Deluxe with no mods, and Subway/El Rail cannot be connected to GLR.

From what I've experienced, GLR is faster than subway/El Rail.

Ferries are an interesting entity... I think they are the fastest (especially when used by sims to head to the next city over) simply because they have a set and unchanging commute time. If you have a city with lots of water connections to it's neighbours, you may find the sims prefering to take the ferry instead of the "direct" expressway and rail links to the neighbouring cities.

Ferry's are the fastest, there is no travel time penalty, monorail would be next, subway/elevated rail [same system], then comes the railroad, which I need to look up because it's in there somewhere. I know the sims don't mind riding the railroad for long distances.

Ground/elevated light rail is an addition that comes with the NAM.

Ok... Tungston's post has made me question something:

I've been reading GLR as Ground Level Rail. Tungston's post makes me think that it could also be Ground level Light Rail (what I would call GLLR.) Which meaning are the members here using for GLR?

Ground Light Rail, it's basically lightrail on ground, it's a on ground version of the elevated light rail, some do also use GLR as a tram system.

Monorails are quite fast too. In my game, it's Subway at 200mph

Erm...Sketchley, yes you can connect all 3...there are are GLR to subway connection, Subway to EL, and EL to GLR.

Also I tested this out since this intrigued me...I made a blank tile...created water 10 tiles wide to split the "city " in 2....and built a house on 1 side and an industry on the other, so the only job for the one house was across the water.  First I used road, then demolished and then rail, sub, el and GLR(not so sure about this one because had to use puzzle "filler pieces" and I got wacky results, but  it's essentially Ground version of EL rail.   Ferry was tricky to get it going, but the results were as posted above.  Ferry may appear faster in a populated city because the roads are conjested/traffic, and you do not encounter "traffic" with ferry's.

Ok... since the concensious appears to be that GLR = ground light rail, I retract my comment above about it not being connectable with other means of rail.

For clarification, in the above, I am referring to the rail types that come standard with SC4 Deluxe Edition (specificaly subway, elevated rail, rail, and monorail.)
