I have a feeling that if you ever met a man (for example) that was racists towards you because you were Chinese, Japanese, or Korean, I doubt this event changed anything for that man. That man was probably racists before the event ever occured.

As I understand it, the South Korean media raised this question.  They are (or were) concerned that this incident would inspire the American authorities to expel all South Koreans from the country.

As far as I know, that was never going to be considered.  This guy was clearly a nutjob.  He happened to be a South Korean nutjob but, as you say, he was one individual, not a representative of the whole country. quote>

Exactly. I personally don't understand why the media would ever say this (maybe for their ratings?). You know, now that I think about it more, I suppose one could make the argument that Arab-Americans were looked at differently after 9/11, so I guess that's what the media could have been thinking.

It's not so much about the ratings.  The same thing happened in the US during World War II.  The first generation Japanese-Americans had this happen to them.  However, when the Army created a special unit to allow them to serve, the Nisei unit ended up being the most decorated unit in US military history.

...After imperialist Japan gobbled up most of Asia and launched a surprise attack on the US military, bringing them into the war.

The link with a nutjob who happened to be Korean is pretty weak, at best.

What I was saying is that when you have been wronged by someone, it's somewhat common to have misgivings about anything connected with that person.  If you go to a store and get ripped off by one of the cashiers, the average person would remember that and quit going to the store entirely, even though only one person was at fault and the no one else condoned what happened to you.  Hence, the perceptions based on the actions of one tend to get applied to everyone in the category.  That's how stereotypes are born.

Exactly. Why do people think all Chinese people know martial arts? Jackie Chan. It's sooooo annoying. Do some kung fu! Do some jackie chan! *weird noises, clicks, shrieks* Tell me what I said in chinese.

Just smile and walk away...

I don't know where you live but where I live, I'm not required to do martial arts.

I didn't think so. Nobody's required to do it, and certainly not in China.
