A very long walk

So, I'm developing a city to accompany a couple of others that are well under-way and taking great care to avoid the "sims in orbit" problem.

I build some industry near the map centre and plan to develop the area around the ferry port as a commercial district.

Sims were already working in the city to the south (there weren't enough jobs so I don't mind this). In order to get them to work in the city where they live I force them to go through the (future) commercial district and past the new industrial park so that they take these jobs first. Forcing sims to drive past employment centres to get to a neighbour usually works well in this respect.

The result was that these sims elected to stay in their neighbour city jobs but were prepared to walk an astonishing 156 tiles to get to the edge of the map!! Commute times rose by a paltry 5 minutes (NAM Radical in operation).

How on earth has this happenned and how on earth can I fix it!

I had the exact same issue with NAM radical when I was using it. I ended up putting it back down to the more conservative settings because the sims just do bizarre things to get to work when there's almost no limit on commute.

Looks like the Junior Sports Program ordinance is really paying off for your sims...

I would put a bus stop between the road and the avenue where they touch. No, it doesn't really fix the problem, but if they're going to walk, they might as well take a more direct route.

Strange, my sims won't walk more then 5 tiles. Makes for a problem with the stations on the cornor of 6x6 blocks. Most won't go even the 5 tiles to get to the bus. Going to start moving the bus stops over a tile and putting in subways.

It's probably because of radical NAM settings...I use 10x commute and 2x capacity (I think?) myself and don't experience this.

I wish my lazy Sims would walk like that. Maybe you have a city of hobos.

Looks like you got a city of Forset gumps and they all run to work like the wind. Its about 1.5 miles in real distance 156 tiles .

LOL.

Can't say I've had that problem to that extent... 156 tiles is about 2.4km in real life distance. (decided to translate that distance for the rest of us...).

Nice suburb, by the way. 9.gif

It's a problem with the game (it'll happen with or without network modds), & how it keeps (or is suppose to keep) track with network neighbour connections. From the picture it looks like an avenue connection; quite often this will happen if you upgrade an existing road (single network) neighbour connection to an avenue (dual network) connection. The game does not always handle the network neighbour upgrade connection properly & thus this can result, causing all sorts of problems.

How to fix:

1. bulldoze the neighbour connection completely, from the edge. Run the city for awhile, save & exit (do not reconnect it back just yet); then do the same for the neighbouring city it was connected to. Be sure to run both cities for a little while in an unconnected state.

2. Go back into the first city & reconnect the network to neighbouring city. Run for awhile. Save & exit

3. Load neighbouring city & join the connection with rest of network & run for awhile. save & exit.

4. Load first city up & run for awhile.

And/or something similar along these lines. I can not remember if it's important what, if any, order this is done in.

If done properly, it should realign & correct the issue, though you may still get some pedestrian commuters. Similar issues can also happen when upgrading an existing avenue neighbour connection to a ground highway connection, though it does not always require doing the above; it just requires loading the neighbouring city so that it can update the network connection & the commuters on it on its end.

That upgrade bug never happens with my cities; in fact, my sims going over the connection are now for some reason addicted to the bus (more buses than cars on that avenue), but still refuse to walk more than a couple tiles. I'm pretty sure its that radical NAM setting you're using that causes this.

Your people walk 2 miles to their jobs and mine don't want to drive 2.5 miles to their jobs! I have to set my NAM to radical!

How in the heck did you get them to walk? that far? my animated sims will never even walk 3 blocks to a bus station! (what moderations did you download?)

I've had something like that happen a few times, but they always seem to be walking to the neighbouring cities. Doesn't seem to be a problem and the commute times aren't ridiculous. I never figured out what causes it. I don't have any radical NAM settings in use.

I'm sorry, but I just have to say it. I was hoping any issue in this thread would have been resolved and people would stop posting so that this thread and the title would not be visible to me anymore, but alas, that was not the case. So now I have to say it, just because it's the first, and only, thing I think about when I see this thread title anywhere.

...off a very short pier.
