Purevolume & Last FM

As Myspace and Facebook are talked about everyday I find myself finding new websites to replace the so called "addiction" of the two. I have bravely stepped away from Myspace by deleting my profile in January and my Facebook.. well not to long ago.

annnyyywaaayyy, I have found myself on either Purevolume or Last FM each day looking for new music. Purevolume and Last FM have been around for quite sometime and I guess you could consider them "blog" type things but, I consider them Myspaces that are fully dedicated to music.

Purevolume reminds me more of Myspace than Last FM. You can add multiple pictures and write on your friends pages but you cannot change layouts and so on. You "top 8" is now you "top 9" favorite artists. You can add as many of your favorite bands as you want by just searching their name and going straight to their page. As for finding new music, I dont find Purevolume as useful as Last FM. Purevolume has a lot of local bands, which you can search by your state or city. You can find any highly popular MTV bands such as Fall Out Boy to your next door neighbor recording his songs in his basement. The artist makes their page by themselves, so you may not find all of your favorite bands but they do have a majority of bands.  Purevolume also lets you find shows that are coming up in your area but because the artist makes their own page they sometimes dont add in the concert dates etc.

Last FM reminds me less of Myspace because you can write on your friends pages, but it is not as open as myspace. When you make an account on Last FM you download the Last FM program that you can search in and listen to music. I'm really confused about this because, for example, I search "The Shins" it gives me a so-called "radio station" that is a collection of songs of diiferent artists that are similar to The Shins. But as for searching music on the actual website, I find that difficult because you search by genre which is harder than you think. But once you get to an artist page (which is not made by the artist btw, so it has full bios and such) you can see similar artist, record labels and related groups you can join about the artist. As for your own personal page, your friends can see your top played songs and your top played artists. Also, you can recommend songs to your friends through Last FM.

I have an account on both but I have no friends on there because my friends are sadly still stuck on myspace. I find Purevolume helpful for local bands and it is easier to use. But I truely like Last FM better because it shows accurate concert dates and its "similar artists" tool.

If anyone is into finding new music as much as I am, I suggest checking out either one of these pages!

And if you do have an account of either, give your opinion! 4.gif

I love last.fm.

With that out of the way, you mention radio stations and seem to be confused as to them.  An integral component of last.fm is "tagging" - in which you, or any other scrobbler, labels music with "tags" that usually describe the song's genre, geographic location, so on.  When you tag a song with something, a radio station is created (or updated) which contains songs or artists that have been tagged with that particular tag.

However, I've not used the radio feature that much, as I prefer to scrobble my own music.  About 3,300 songs so far...

Last.fm used to give out great recommendations before the site was given a major update a couple of months back, but I find the new recommendations (though they are accurate and certainly not misguided) seem to veer into extremely mainstream territory.  I do like the similar artists feature - that usually is, though highly predictable, on target.

It's cool to see that someone else on ST is using last.fm - it'd be interesting to see if there are any more.

(a little late but...) Thanks for clearing that up!

I had no idea what tagging was, I knew it had something to do with genres. I like the last fm radio but I feel like I hear the same song 4 times in an hour sitting. It gets irritating... It may be better if I just scrobble my own music like you do. But, how exactly do you scrobble yoour own music?Does that mean that you go to the artist page and find songs there because usually there are no full length tunes.

Sorry, I am still new at this!

I would love to see if other people on ST use last fm but so far its just you and me ! 4.gif

I find Purevolume highly convenient, and I've just recently gotten into Last FM. However, I also like to listen to unsigned bands at Garage Band.

Pure Volume is one of my favorite sites! I love getting the samplers from there, and I've gotten into more than a few bands because of them. I found out about bands like Anberlin and Emery before they were big, and I like going back and browsing the unsigned bands for stuff I like. It's great!
