Though I've personally never been to the Netherlands, I have always been fascinated by it. To me it is just amazing how such a small country can have such a large economic importance. I also love the architecture and cityscapes. Hopefully one day I may be able to visit this great little nation.

P.S: Belgium also impresses me very much for many of the same reasons.

Never explain, never complain.

I was born in Amsterdam and lived there until we moved to Switzerland 10 years ago. I'm still visiting my family in Holland 2-3 times a year. I haven't been to Amsterdam since we moved because nearly my whole family lives in the province Friesland, but I'm planning to go there on holiday this summer.

Leiden is clearly the best town in the Netherlands.

Leiden has the oldest university in the country. This is the Academiegebouw (academy building). It's mostly used for ceremonial purposes, but once I actually had lecture there every tuesday, which is quite exceptional since it's not usually used for regular lectures. It's located on the Rapenburg, a beautiful canal.

The Marekerk is a beautiful old Protestant church. I have been inside once, the organ sounds absolutely beautiful.

The Hooglandse Kerk is an absolutely enormous church.

Leiden Town hall on the Breestraat. Because Leiden is a very old city, it's not really practical to reach the center by car. The Breestraat (lit. Broad Street) is the only road that's suitable for through traffic. However, for the most part it's only authorized for busses (and trucks serving the shops on the Breestraat) to drive here. If you want to reach Leiden by car, you need to park in one of the many parking garages at the edge of the center.

To the left, the Beestenmarkt (lit. 'animal market'), in the center the enormous windmill 'molen de Valk'.

I cycle over this bridge nearly every day; you need quite a bit of speed to cross that steep slope! To the left the small windmill 'molen de Put'

Leiden is predominantly a student's city, and it is generally recommended to become member of a student's society or student corps if you want to have a bit of fun, since outside of these there's not exceptionally much nightlife (though there are a lot of nice pubs). My student society is on this street, the Oude Singel.

If you want to see more, just look up Leiden on Google Maps and look around with streetview in the old center (east of the Centraal Station). The streetview photo's are of optimal quality these days.

The White House Rotterdam

A real historic Dutch Pearl
Symbol of the till 2004 biggest seaport of the world an nowday's biggest seaport of Europe

Build in 1897 by a couple rich port barons and this building was with it 10 floors Europes first official skyscraper.

This building is one of the few buildings that survived German bombings may 1940 that destroyed 95% of the historical Rotterdam town center.
