Well, 122 Leadenhall must be up there now with the wierd development phases. This Diagram explains the process of turning this...

Into this....

They are going to demolish the lower floors of the existing 122 Leadenhall, leaving the upper floors hanging from the core. the foundation work for the new 122 Leadenhall will take place whilst the upper floors are removed.

That's... bizarre. o__O I can see how it would be quicker and possibly save money, but it's still weird.

They'll do that so when the upper floors collapse they take the others with them, thereby making the process cost-effective and entirely efficient and "safe." 3.gif

I do remember one building (I think it was a hotel), where they built the frame, and then finished it off from the top to the bottom.

~ COMING SOON! Exciting new projects! ~

This is not being built from top to bottom though 2.gif This is just the 16 story 122 Leadenhall being demolished that way. The lovely 48 story 122 Leadenhall wont actually rise untill it is gone. Just the foundation works will take place during demolition.

I know! 3.gif But still, just think if they built the Burj Dubai from top to bottom. 3.gif

Anyway, this is a pretty odd way to demolish a building, but still pretty cool. I'm just curious about one thing... the post doesn't mention how long this will take. How long is the process to do this?

about half a year to demoliish the building, the demolition will take the same time as it would going the other way, but it allows the construction of the skyscraper to be brought forward several months.

Remembering ofcourse, you cant detonate a building in the 2000 year old Square Mile. Especially with the Gherkin and 51 Lime Street over the street

And the quicker you can get office space in London, the more Mon

Considering the type of construction as long as they can protect the piling workers below it shouldn't be much of a problem. This construction technique meant that the building was supported from the core and built out from it minimising the surface area of foundations required. Obviously the new tower being bigger needs a more advanced foundaiton of a greater side. This can take month to do all the piling and concreting so basically they are fast tracking this by incorporating it at the same time as part of the demolition.
