Information about Burbank

Burbank sits on the banks of the River Oscuro, the origin of the name is unknown, althought it is thought that the river was first discovered by Italian settlers in the 11th century, who, on the way to Asia, decided to make camp here for the winter. However this was a bad choice as it is thought that many of them were eaten by bears or died of frostbite whilst swimming in the icy river. Those who remained decided to make a permant settlement to hounour those who died.

The city is named after the Burbank Trading Company who arrived here in the 17th century and set up a logging and mining company, as many of the townsfolk worked for the company the city was named after it. Unfortunatley the Burbank Trading company went bankrupt in 1899.

By 1900 Burbank was a large capital city of one of the world's greatest powers, Liberland. However in the summer of 1924 a communist revolution broke out, this divided the city in two, the communists took control of the south and the remaining Imperial Burbankians moved to the north, but in 1926 the communists tried to move to the North. These events caused the Imprialists to build a wall dividing the city in two, this wall remained until the city united under a new more democratic leadership in 1972. Despite this sections of the wall still remain in some parts of the city.

Today Burbank remains the capital of Liberland, it is the nation's principal political, economic, financial, educational, and transportation center. It is home to many scientific and educational institutions, as well as numerous sport facilities. It possesses a complex transport system that includes the world's busiest subway systems.

UPDATE I -- Sitford Olympic Park

The Sitford Olympic Park is situated on the banks of the River Oscuro. It was built to host the 1978 Simlympic Games. These games were one of the most important events in Burbank history, they were influential in healing the wounds of the north/south divide and further united the city.

    sitfordolympicparkvb0.jpg

Immediatley to the North of park is the Oscuro Ring Road which was completed in 1975, it is the city's second ring road after the Garden Ring Road which surrounds the city centre. The park also has a ferry port to the east.

The opening cermony was held on July 19th in the United Olympic Stadium:

The stadium underwent an extensive renovation in 1999 to meet new regulation for future sporting events.

The other large stadium within this complex is Stevenson Football Stadium:

The only other venue within this park is in the indoor arena which was used for wrestling, it is situated next to the olympic waterfall:

All the other events where held at different location throughout the city. Burbank hopes that the simlympics will return to the city but for now the city plans to concentrate on holding other events. Due to its location, across the river from Burbank State University, the park hopes to host the Universiade, although the university it self has the facilities to host some of the events.

UPDATE 2 ------ Burbank State University

Burbank State University is the largest and oldest university in Liberland, founded in 1777. Now the University has 4,000 staff, 29 faculties and 30,000 students. The university was founded by Scott Brian by a decree of Emperor William on January 12th, teaching began on March 15th which is celebrated as student's day in Liberland. The university was first housed in a church, moving to its current location in 1800. Below we can see one of the original faculty buildings, which washome to the law faculty:

    buildingrq0.jpg

The universtity press was the Burbank Imperial, which until the revolution of 1924 was the most popular paper in the country. Many believe that the university was the birthplace of the revolution itself. In the main building a social-democratic society was formed.

    oldbuildingvr2.jpg

The society was founded by children of the proletariat and peasants, who had been eligable for admission since 1900. This led to the Emperor ordering a military prescence on the campus. It is thought that up to 30 students may have been secretly killed around this time.

In the 1970's a new area of campus was created which was home to 10 new faculties:

    70scomplexyg8.jpg

The university is home to the national library which is home to the largest collection of books in the city.

    unilibraryhb2.jpg

The university's also has an arena and a championship sized swimming pool and due to its closeness to the Sitford Olympic Park, which is just across the river, it sometimes uses the facilities there.

jacqulina: Thanks, not alot of parking though.

Schulmanator: Thank you, always appreciate the comments

exgamer07: Thanks, I dunno how they get those shots, good question though.

kraft_d: Thanks, i think a stadium similar to the football stadium was destroyed today.
