Will the airports in Rush Hour work regionaly in Rush Hour or is it still going to work city by city. What about Universities and Power Plants (Regional Power Girds instead of city power grids.).

I just hope they increase the capacity as my old city with 750,000 people needed 5 Large International Airports which is insane. They are so big they should be able to handle 2 million like a real one.

Good questions on regional airports and power plant options

I was posting an idea of a regional/national power grid for your region in a recent post on what expansion pack would u liketo see after RH

Will have to wait and see to find out

Well there's a kbi file in the modds section (it's an older modd) that adjusts the capacity of the airports, but I'd suggest against using this, as you'd have to replace the games installation files if you no longer wanted it.

I myself am actually working on some additional airports at the moment, with (substantially) increased capacities (among a few other adjustments). I am having some slight problems with these additional airports though, so I may just do up an adjusted capacity plugin. But I think I'll wait until Rush Hour comes out just to see whether or not this has indeed changed at all (because if it has, there may be no point to release anything of my own for this). If the airports with Rush Hour though are pretty much the same, I'll most likely do up something for the airports' capacties (as a simple plugin). We'll just wait and see I guess2.gif.

look at some real life cities. Chicago, Washington, Dallas/Ft Worth, and New York have at least 1 large and 1 small airport to handle their air traffic needs. Atlanta, Detroit, and Boston have one large airport to handle their traffic

Baltimore has one, Baltimore Washington International Airport (BWI) and Washington DC has about three international airports including the joint airport in Baltimore.

Yes, Washington has three major (commercial) airports, one of which it shares with Baltimore.  The biggest of these is Dulles International, which owns 11,000 acres of land, 5,000 of which are used for aircraft operations.  5,000 acres is HUGE in SimCity terms.  That corresponds to 20 million square meters, or 79,040 SimCity tiles (16 meters per side).  That means that if you wanted to plop down an airport on the scale of Dulles International in SC4, you would need a square of tiles measuring 281 tiles on a side.  If my memory is correct, that's larger than an entire large city map, and that's only enough for aircraft operations, which is less than half the property owned by the airport.

On the flip side, Dulles served 17.2 million passengers last year.

We can definately forget all about plopping real sized airports in our cities, the longest runways on many international airports are often around 3,5 km long. In smicity terms that would come close to spanning the distance between the edges of a large city.

Apperently, BWI is suppose to be the 2nd fastes growing airport in the world. The first is some airport in Japan.

We all know that many, many compromises on things like size and capacity of thins in the game had to be made to make this gamework. But to get back to the original point of the thread, even if we don't have city-sized airports, the ones we have should serve the entire region, rather than just the city they're in. Though what do airports really do that matters besides serve as a demand cap reliever?

Does anyone know yet whether airports in Rush Hour are regional or not? If I start a new city/district away from my downtown and build an international airport there, then connect this to my downtown with monorail, will it actually be used? Or must I build them in the center of downtown like in SC4?

If they're not regional, is it still possible to get the same cap relief using a few highway links and make do without an airport, or is there some other reason why I should build one? I don't like building airports downtown as they take up way too much building space and get in the way of all my highways and rail links.

I agree Airports should work regionally meaning more airports in a region more usage (as it has more places to be able to go) and Airport types should serve a purpose more than demand that we have no idea on knowing how its generated. It would be even better if it served as a form of transportation (mainly for R$$$) who work in far cities. They could just ride a jet there and get tehre faster and allowing road congestion to ease quite a bit.

Current Airports serve no more than demand cap relief imho which is sad because its a severly underdeveloped feature. Airports are an essential part of any city and should be made a valid option and should be accessable regionally since Small Citys and Towns usually use the airports of Major cities...

Baltimore/Washington Int'l Airport is expanding with a huge new terminal just for Southwest Airlines. They also just finished completeing a huge 15 story parking garage. I think it is 15 stories or something close to that. IT'S MASSIVE!!!!! When i flew out of BWI this summer, there were aboue 10 planes waiting to take off on the runway at one time. VERY BUSY AIRPORT! I do think what would be cool with airports in Simcity 4, is that they could still be an international airport or landing strip but could be upgraded with a new terminals or another runway or a helicopter landing pad! Whatever was needed.

This is all well and good, but does anyone actually have a solution to this problem? I mean, does anyone have a mod that brings the effects of an airport to the entire region?
