City Life vs. SimCity 4: Comparisons, Advantages, Disadvantages

I was at Wal-Mart the other day, in the PC section. On the shelf, side-by-side, sat two boxes for $19.95 each. One box said SimCity 4 Deluxe. The other said City Life. Thought to myself: "If I was an educated noobie, had neither, but a PC, which one would I pick?" "SimCity 4. Duh."

First off, what PC do you have?

SimCity 4 requires lower, so it will run a bit faster.

City Life runs higher, so it will run a bit slower.

What is most important to you in a game?

SimCity 4 features challenge and expandability.

City Life offers graphics.

What do you think is most in city-building?

SC4 says money. CL says people.

Are you a transit freak?

SimCity 4 can live with your need for the right amount of yellow solid stripes, and can expand to at least 10 different transit options.

City Life shows bland roads with a single solid yellow line in roads (eww)

That's all I can think of. Can you add more?

Interesting thread here.

SC4: Graphics ain't bad, but they sure as hell ain't good. CL: Freedom from grids, go anywhere in your city.

SC4: Lots of buildings, lots of variety in lots of places. CL: Buildings a little repetitive, boring transit options, but recently found way to modify game.

That's all for now because now I have work to do. TopCliff

SC4: Came out in 2003

CL: Came out 2006

Result: Give City Life some time! Sure, it ain't great now, but if you look back at the original SC4 Vanilla, how many of you can say that it looks very fun now? If you want to compare SC4 to City Life, you should compare it to the Original SC4 Vanilla.

In the interest of being fair, I will include CL WITH the expansion pack.

Actually a total $%&^! buying impulsively would probably pick up city life as from first glance has better graphics..

then again the simcity name is well known, while city life is less so.

City life was enjoyable for the short term, but when you acctually started making money, alot of the time it never went down and the game became impossibly easy to beat, even on the harder levels.

Sim City 4 is more detailed, more realistic and more City orientated than Socially orientated. True, differnet social classes tend to hate each other, but I doubt Blue collar workers would beat up hippies on the street, Graphic Designers don't box with the Lawyers who live next door... on a daily basis anyway. It just not realistic.

To make it a little more realistic, maybe they should have made the social classes more like, race, religion, sexuality, belifes... I know it would have got a hell of a lot of stick from the censoring organizations, but a neo-nazi is more likley going to abuse people of a different race than a Graphic Designer is going to be ticked off over a few Blue collar workers living next door.

I did the demo of City Life, I'll save my 20 bucks to put on SC5 now that it's in the works. Maybe put it on 1701 A.D. if I can find it.

SC4 plus Rush Hour excluding bats....its still a very fun game..even without the NAM...I played it about a month ago...no mods or bats...now my game is a tad more custom...

as for CL..I was expecting nothing much, but I was hoping for a good game to push EA into making SC5....I think CL did make that push...EA got shoved...yay...but CL even with the new "World" EP doesn't look very good...umm...why World...why not do what SC4 did....remake transit...with RH...SC4 really is alot more advanced the CL and SC4 is older....

Yeah, City Life really didn't offer much in the way of acctual city simulation... there wasn't much choice for transit either... plus, there was about a maximum of 5 different buildings for each culture... made you cities very VERY repetitive and boring...

And I agree that SC4 was fun without mods... its alot more fun with them, but to begin with, it was fun without... I lasted a year untill I started looking for mods. Acctually, when my PC crashed and I lost everything in November 2004, the sites (I think it was Sim City Central) got rid of its downloads section so I never had anymore mods untill I joined Simtrop last March.

You can't really accuse SimCity 4 of having 'not so good' graphics, it came out in 2003, which was pretty good at the time. Plus SC, back in the early 90's was refered to as the smart people game, since SCC was generally played by college students. City Life on the other hand, looks like something made for a much younger (probably even dumber) audience.
