Tomorrow, the 23rd of November, we celebrate Thanksgiving Day in the U.S.A. It was first celebrated at the end of October, 1623, by the Pilgrims at Plymouth Colony. For three years, they had struggled with drought, dire winters, disease, fire, and a misbegotten scheme of communism that caused a poor harvest the first three years in America. In 1623, they had a bountiful harvest, and set aside a day to give thanks to God in a great feast, with both their community and the Indians feasting together in peace and harmony, thankful for the bounty God had given them. It has since become traditional to celebrate a national day of thanks to God every fourth Thursday in November, though most often people drop the religious aspects, eat a lot of turkey and pumpkin pie, watch football, and get fat.

To all who celebrate: Happy Thanksgiving!

    Amen!

I got full off of cake and deer meat today (today's my birthday), and turkey, potatoes, pumpkin pie, etc. comes tomorrow; what a week!

True.  The "giving thanks" part is free form; it's up to individuals to do that as they see fit.  But you left out the part about getting together with family and friends.  In many cases, people often see these family and friends only during the holidays, usually due to geographic distance.   It's worth the time and effort, and a few extra calories, to reconnect with people.

Happy Turkey Day to all who celebrate.  And for those who don't, you are invited to join in and celebrate as well.    It's a nice holiday, one people can celebrate regardless of their belief system.  A variation on the old harvest festivals.

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing.    - Pope Francis

Yes, it is a time for family and friends to enjoy each other's company.  I have relatives coming into town for Thanksgiving, and we plan to sit around and talk and eat.  And I plan to once again prove that I can eat more than any other adult in the family.3.gif
