Mmm.  Sound's Turkish, but I've never had it.  What's on the spit (sword)?

Vigilante1987a:  I am adding some of our special home-made chicken soup to your order.

N_O_Body: Chicken is on the spit, along with some lamb (just because I love lamb), tomatoes onions hot peppers and leaks (they are supposed to be good for you).

Traditionally, chicken is the only meat used along with local vegetables and your spices.  It is just really a kabob, it's the spices that give it the international flair.

Hard_Justice:  Well, maybe more like a souvlaki, but remember that Shish Kabob means "lamb on a sword".

Anyone coming to the November 1st Levee?

Hi, all, sorry I missed the Thanksgiving feast, was getting ready to go on a trip to visit my brother.  I'm back now, and speaking of spices, we sampled some Somali cuisine on my trip.  There was mango juice, sambusa, and basmati rice with a goat stew featuring cumin, coriander, and tumeric with a bit of coconut milk and vegetables-- onions, peppers, carrots, etc.  The goat tasted similar to lean beef as the link says, and was very good.

I'll be there for the costume party, so right now some hot spiced cider sounds good to get in the mood.

Wow, this thread has a major page flip bug.

N_O_Body: I have always wondered, how do you know so much about food?

If you have never experienced fall in a mid-western American farm town, you are missing out, IMHO. Friday night football games, corn mazes, "haunted houses", the annual Chili Fest on the square, shooting my Mosin-Nagant at soda cans as the farmers in the nearby field harvest golden-colored soybeans. It lets you know you are alive

Nerd:  Well, I was a batchelor for a long time, and restaurants are expensive.  So I learned to cook and this became a kind of hobby.  After I got married, my wife and I shared the cooking, but she often wasn't well, so eventually I took over the kitchen.  Now that I'm a widower, all this stands in good stead.

When I was much younger, I decided to explore fine food.  At the time I was living in Toronto which has everything from pub grub to the highest international cuisines.  If you ever want to gain about twenty pounds, take a week and tour Toronto's restaruants.  An interesting and cosmopolitan vacation.  Good theaters too.

Mostly, I learned French cuisine from Winston's, the old Captain's Table (now defunct), and the major Toronto hotel dining rooms, notably the Kind Edward Hotel and the Inn on the Park.  Greek food is easy because at one time I lived in Greek town on the Danforth.

Fine Italian cuisine can be found all over the city, and oriental restarurants of all types can be easily found.  For really good Chinese food simply look at the area behind the City Hall.  Some really good places there (or used to be there).

In my job, I had George Brown College as a client and often was taken to dinner in the student fine dining lab, Plummers.  Then, when I was later a professor at Georgian College, I often took advantage of their cooking lab called the Georgian Dining Room.  Both fine restaurant schools, and very good.

Nowadays, I sometimes get tips from watching the Food Channel.  Some of those people are beyond price.

So, now you know.  It only takes a life-time as a consumer to learn much about food, but if you are really interested in becoming a chef, then there are lots of good schools in the world.  For a start try your local college.

N_O_Body: What is the November 1st Levee? As far as the name Shish Kabob, no, I did not know that is what it stood for. Learn something new.

Well, a levee is a morning social event.  Since we'll all be out howling on Halloween, I just figured it might not be a bad thing to have a leveee for those who stayed up all night.

Dress at a levee is usually semi-formal.  You know, blazers and grays, sport coats, etc.  Shirt and tie or ascot usually worn.

Too bad, you're missing out on a whole world of men's fashion. If you came into my shop I'm sure I could find a tie even you would like: I've got everything from the ultra-conservative Donald Trump to Ed Hardy. Personally, though, I think Sean Jean has the best designs this season.

Well I hope you have a shirt with a collar, Hard_Justice.  Go and buy a clip-on bow tie.  They are all I wore for years.

Strolls in, tugging at collar and adjusting sport coat.

Man, this tie is a little tight...ah, there, that's better.  Maybe I should have worn a cocktail dress, but dresses weren't mentioned.  20.gif  Has the Levee begun?  If not, I'll have a ribeye, medium rare, baked potato, and a large dinner salad while I wait.  If it has, I'll have whatever you're serving for it.  I work nights, so it would be close to quitting time for me anyway if it was a weeknight.  I did hear some howling outside just a minute ago.  I think it was a human, but we've been known to hear coyotes in the foothills, and the moon is close to full.

Well, ladies usually wear something semi-formal in the haut couture department, but I must say that is different.

The paisley tie is giving me the heaves. Please tuck it in your shirty.

Nice to see you back in business John Boy.quote>

Well, I know your time is different from ours, but you are clearly on the wrong day.  (posting date).  The party ended about 0900Z + 5 (9 a.m. EST).  Sorry you missed it, Craig.  Are you on the Auckland or the Chatham time-zone?  Quite a significant difference, so I am forced to believe that New Zealand is more than 15o wide.  At that latitude, I guess it is not surprising.

Well that is a fine lattitude to take...

Actually I just had to adjust my forum time zone again... it always get a bit messed up when you guys finish or start your daylight saving...

At the moment I am on Nukalofa Time... GMT +13 if I set my time zone to Wellington.. NZ GMT +12, it puts me an hour out. The only time the Wellington NZ timezone works, is the small window between when we start daylight savings for the summer a couple of weeks back... and before you end daylight savings for your winter.

Then when we are off daylight saving and you guys are on... I have to set my time zone to... hmm I forget... um... yeah the other one on the other side of Wellington GMT +11 whatever it is...

One of the quirks of the ST fourm software... heh over at Simpeg I was two hours out... just fixed it there too.

Nothing, really.  It was the hang-over from the Halloween party.

Just saw a Christmas ad.  Good grief!  The ad world really is pushing the season again.  Here is an image of the tie I wear for Christmas.

Sorry about not showing up. I've been out with a bit of the flu.

I have been seeing Christmas advertisements in my town since early October! It's unbelievable.

@NG: Hope you're feeling better. I know what you mean about the ads. I've already got the Christmas decorations up in my store. I'll tell you: nothing drains your Christmas spirit like assembling and decorating 20 Christmas Trees.
