I have a city of High Tec Industry and nice rail system that delivers goods and people, but I wanted to add a sea port. So I did and it is only half used by trucks and I can't connect it via rail? That and it is costing me $500 a month barely used but I don't want to destroy it yet. Any Questions??? I know I have asked a lot of n00by questions on this site since I joined but thanks for all your help! and I hope to have a CJ by the time I figure this game out. . . . or die which ever comes first.

Actually there is the old PEG port with rail connection modded severall times, the last time by swamper77 I think. If you want to use this port together with other ports (there are some...) rather than that it replaces the ingame port you need the support, too, from swamper77 (and a good hint: read the Readme!)

The main funtcion of a port is raising the demand caps for industry. Due to my very own experience ports have a way better influence on I-S and I-M rather than I-HT.

ahh, I see, I must have been confused, I thought they were talking about the regular seaport and rail connections.

I am trying to play the game with very little in the way of mods and add-on's, (altought I must admit I do have the NAM to fix the bug in commute times, but that's it!)

    cheers

You said you pay $500 for your seaport, if you go into your budget menu and under transportation there is a slider you can adjust your seaports and their capacity by how much you fund them (airports too).

Ya, I guess what I was trying to say was I have the demand for it but they just weren't using it.

The seaports act like neighbor connections - they provide a destination for frieght traffic. If it's easier for them to use road or rail to move frieght, they will.

The problem as always is if there is a Road connecting to neighbor they will use Freight Trucks instead of your Seaport.

So try cutting off Road connects to your neighbors and see what happens to your Port.Goodluck

And if you put a rail freight station next to the seaport, it will cause freight to be dropped off to the port.

However, the port should be the closest exit from the city with respect to the industry and/or farms.  The system will always take the shortest route out of town.

Try making the road routes longer or slower.  You can put toll booths on them, for example.

Let me bump this thread, as my question has been discussed here to some extent.

Let's say I have an industrial area in the middle of my city and I have a freight station there. Now instead of connecting to a neighbor with a rail, I'd like to build a rail to the seaport. Does this work? Does the freight train unload its freight at the port automatically? Do I have to put another freight station next to the port? Or is this something that just can't be done?

Well, I decided to make a little experiment to try this out. And it seems that port and rail network don't work together. Grrr!!!

I had a freight station in the middle of an industrial area and a rail connection to the seaport. There were no freight trains anywhere. I connected the rail to a neighbor and suddenly there was a lot of freight going to the neighbor by rail. Now that we had some freight I decided to cut the neighbor connection, so the freight would be forced to go to the seaport. Guess what? All the freight disappeared!

I put a freight station next to the seaport. No help. I made a very long road connection to the seaport. And freight trucks were happily driving all around to place to get to the seaport. Nobody wanted to use the rail connection which would have been a zillion times faster.

Try seeding the station areas with a variety of zone types, even if it's just a single tile of res or comm, or add a station between them that serves res/comm in its zone. Railroads always seem to work best that way.

You know? It's funny, In SC4 Vanilla the first patch available for it waaaay back when it came out said "Trains can now delver freight to seaports" So if this feature was in SC4 Vanilla, Why the heck did they take it out for rush hour/deluxe?

Trains can deliver freight to seaports, so long as a freight station is in direct contact with the port.

What method did you use to determine the freight was being transfered to the seaport?
